In Ireland, we had glass bottles with foil lids. You washed them out, and they collected the empties when they dropped off your morning milk at the doorstep. I can still hear the sound of the quiet electric van coming along the road in the morning and bottles clanking lol.

Here are some good tips shared by a lady who was travelling and her backpack was taken.

1. Make digital AND physical copies of your passport.
Email it to yourself. Save it in the cloud. Send it to a loved one. When it’s gone, this makes reporting and replacing it so much easier.

2. If your passport is stolen, you NEED a police report from the country where it happened.
You can’t get an emergency passport or continue your journey without it. This is non-negotiable. File it immediately.
I will admit the police in Paris were not as helpful as i needed them to be BUT I did get a physical copy of the police report and without that I would not have been able to get on the train to Munich.

3. Make sure “Find My” is turned on — for everything.
Before you travel, double check that Find My is active on your phone, and that your AirPods, laptop, iPad, etc. are updated, registered, and attached to your Apple ID.
If they’re not synced or haven’t been located recently, the system will only show the last known location when they were online — which may not help when they’re stolen. (This is really important)

4. Keep essentials ON your body — not near you, not beside you, ON you.
I thought I’d be fine with my bag next to us. I wasn’t. We weren’t. Cross-body bags, under-jacket slings, anything that attaches to you is safer than something you set down.

5. If your devices are stolen, go online immediately and lock them remotely.
Use iCloud or your device management platform to mark them as lost, display a contact message, and erase them if needed. This prevents anyone from accessing your personal files, emails, or apps — even if the device is offline now, the action will trigger once it’s turned on.

ALSO - Keep an extra phone charger somewhere else. All of my chargers were in the same place, so I don’t have a phone charger. Asking to borrow one in a pinch in another language where an adapter is needed is a hassle.
