Todays 'nerdy' lesson from a self-confessed airfare geek 🥸

In case you didn't know, the 'cost' of your airfare is made up of different components, the actual airfare, the various country and airport taxes & fuel surcharges..

The screenshot below is a fare quote for a return flight from Sydney to Manchester via Doha.

You'll see the FARE component is AUD1107, then the next 3 lines all have TX & silly travel industry codes, which are the various taxes. These taxes will change depending on the airline you're flying, the government regulations of where you're departing from, transiting and your destination.. The fuel surcharge (the YQ tax) is also a large component of the TX and dictated by the airline (this was implemented during the fuel shortage many years ago, and seems to have stuck around!).

So, when you see the airfare and think 'gee, it's expensive' the airfare is actually pretty cheap, it's the taxes & fuel surcharges that make up the majority of the cost, and these charges are outside of the airlines control also.

Here's a further fun fact - I earn 1% (at most) on the FARE component only, so in this instance it would be $11.07 per ticket - which is why I charge a ticketing fee, $95 on an economy ticket covers my time and also the fees I'm charged for issuing your ticket, not to mention dealing with the airlines when things go wrong so you don't have to!

Hey everyone! There's been a bit of chatter in our network about clients booking direct with suppliers, and then coming to us to book the crumbs or pick up the pieces when things go wrong! It's also happened to me a few times, so I thought I'd take this opportunity to share some info about booking travel, especially with your local travel agent (like me!).

Unlike some other agency chains, I am an individual business owner/sole trader, working in partnership with TravelManagers Australia, so I don't earn a salary or retainer, I earn an income when you book your travels through me - that's as simple as it gets.

If you're currently booking directly with airlines, hotels, tour companies or cruise lines they keep the commission that would normally go to a travel agent and instead of one person managing all components of your travels, you'll be a booking number next in the queue to have your questions answered by someone who doesn't know your booking, it's a transactional relationship rather than personal.

If you're currently booking through online travel providers or internet aggregators, your money may not be protected, your booking may not even ever get confirmed and if that happens you literally have nobody you can speak with to talk through your plans if something falls apart. The chatbot doesn't know how to help you!

Surely you've got better things to do with your time right?

When you book with me, as this is my business, I don't hand you over to anyone else once I've made the sale, you work with me from the beginning, (I'll even buy you a coffee), and I'm with you every step of the way from initial planning, booking, document delivery and I am even available 24/7 if you need me whilst travelling.

I love planning, the more complicated the itinerary the better, and you can be assured I'll have triple-checked every component, looked at reviews, spoken to experts, found the best value and if I haven't had first-hand experience, I know someone in our network of 530 agents who has!

TravelManagers Australia has very strong relationships and preferred agreements with our supplier partners, sometimes even able to offer value-add products & services that you might not get direct, extended deposit times, late check-outs, room upgrades etc.

So, next time you're planning a trip, think about supporting small businesses like mine, it will save you time and your sanity as well as maximise your travel investment.

Hello and Happy New Year to you all. I hope you had a lovely Christmas break and if you're back at work (like me!), that your 2025 is starting happy & healthy.

I thought I'd jump in to share that the UK has finally implemented their Electronic Travel Authorisation (UK ETA) for all Australian citizens effective TODAY!

What does this all mean? Travellers to the UK will have to apply for a digital permit in order to enter England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, allowing stays in the UK for up to 6 months for the following purposes:

🇬🇧Visiting the UK for up to 6 months for tourism, family and friend visits, business purposes, or short-term studies.
🇬🇧 Staying in the UK for up to 3 months under the Creative Worker visa concession.
🇬🇧 Visiting the UK for a permitted paid engagement.
🇬🇧 Transiting through the UK, including instances where UK border control is not crossed.

Cost is GBP10 per person

Starting January 8, 2025, Australian citizens will be required to obtain a UK Electronic Travel Authorization (UK ETA) to enter the United Kingdom. It’s a new digital travel permit that allows Australians to enter the UK for short stays.

It's nearly the end of November already, and boy what a busy week it's been with lovely clients taking advantage of some Black Friday sales for 2025.

🧡 Thank you to my family, it's not easy running a business from a home office with a growing family, I'm so grateful to have had the support of my husband, the patience of my kids and the encouragement of extended family in the early days when things were tough. I stepped away from a guaranteed income and job security with a mission to do things my way and be more available to enjoy watching my kids grow up after always putting them second in their toddler years. I don't for a second take any day for granted and know how fortunate I am to have the best of both worlds after 10 years. i.e. a thriving business and a happy family filled with travel wanderlust who've shared in my successes as well as the pandemic tears and encourage me every step of the way every day.

Did you know that you can subscribe to my e-newsletter to be kept up to date on the latest travel news and offers?

I try not to bombard my subscribers with too many emails so I choose carefully how many I push through to your inboxes and which ones I opt out of sending, because I know how precious everyone's clicks are and I don't want to waste your time either!

It often surprises me to see which email was the tipping point for someone to click that "unsubscribe" button (yes I look at the stats!).. & I'm always sorry to see people go.

"Let me know if you see any deals..... to "! If only I had a dollar for every time someone shouts that to me in the supermarket, or sends me a random message out of the blue.

Out of curiosity I pulled apart an on face value attractive holiday deal to find that it was a lead in cabin on a cruise ship (inside cabin, no window) and that the tour component was very basic with a LOT of additional costs to pay on arrival and no meals included.

So when I reply that "I don't do travel deals" I'm not being intentionally difficult! Sometimes price gets in the way I realise this, so there's always compromise. If you're wanting the cheapest holiday to tick off your travel to-do list then by all means buy one of the online deals, but if you want a tailored holiday and to be involved in the planning process then use a travel professional or you could end up paying a lot more than your super cheap travel deal.

I will tailor an itinerary in consultation with you, working around your wants, needs & must sees, after all it's your holiday so it should be shaped to fit you, not the other way round!

Without a personal travel manager, you're on your own!

I was chatting to a supplier partner earlier today, she asked how my week had been, I told her I was madly trying to keep on top of my emails all coming through from my preferred supplier partners with and wasn't even sure where to begin.

Her advice was "yeah there's no point trying to keep up, just tell your clients to call and you'll find them"... so, what are you waiting for?
