For the past three years we have worked closely with Torres Brandy on their global competition: Torres Brandy Zero Challenge. This is not a cocktail competition and instead, interested hospitality folks are asked to submit an idea for a sustainable bar project. The grand prize for this competition is 30K Euros to make said project come alive.

In 2024 when we attended the global finals for Torres Brandy Zero Challenge in Barcelona, I was amazed by the variety of project ideas that were presented by 10 bartenders from across the globe. My eyes were opened to how each country is facing different challenges in terms of sustainability and how these finalists were working to tackle these challenges.

This past March I was able to attend the global finals again and this time around, I was amazed by the similarities of some of the projects that were submitted by the 11 national finalists. This year it felt that we were more united in our struggles, enforcing the importance of tackling some key issues.

Toronto (and area!) come on out to the Altos Tequila Tahona Society event taking place on Monday, April 14th! This is the first Tahona Society event to take place in Canada since 2023! The focus of the event will be sustainability and there is a lot to talk about!

We will also be sharing info about the Tahona Society competition which is all about creating a sustainable bar project. We cannot say enough good things about competitions like this that do great things for the planet. One finalist from Canada will be chosen to go to Mexico to participate in the global finals to vie for the top prize of a whopping $50,000 USD to make the project come alive! The deadline for submissions is April 30th.

To get you prepped and inspired to enter this competition, we are hosting a Tahona Society event with Corby Spirit & Wine on Monday, April 14th from 12pm to 3pm at Civil Works and we would love to see you there! Every and any bartender is welcome to attend. This event’s speakers will include 2018 Tahona Competition Winner, Alex Black. There will be great food, drinks, seminars and conversation.

It is best not to confuse age for wisdom. We all know a bartender that has been behind the same bar for just a bit too long. While it might be great for the regulars, after a while, it is important to experience new things and stay open to what else is out there. This month for Independent Study Day, we have invited Daniel Tavares of Bar Mordecai and Nice Ice to tell us all about working at one of Canada's Best Bars and how he got there. We have known him for a while and his trip has had some divulging paths... including a stint at Eau De Vie in Melbourne, Australia and some time making cider. We will be serving some Tiny 'Tinis from Stoli and Elit and talking about how Vodka might be the most versatile spirit on your bar.

Doors open at 12pm with the industry chat beginning at 12:30pm. Then from 1:30pm to 3pm there is time to hang with one another, make cocktails and have lunch!
