My Colorado Hemma We've sold our loved home called the Dairy and are on a new journey. Stay tuned for updates!

This page houses memories from The Dairy, our loved mountain home and now our new chapter, a remodeling project in Denver - a Scandinavian refresh of a 1980's family home. Borta bra, men hemma bäst. = Away is good, but home is best.

It’s been a while since I shared an update on the renovation, but there’s been a lot of progress behind the scenes! I’m not quite living there full-time yet, but furniture is starting to move in and I’m beginning to add some personal touches.

We still have a couple of big projects ahead — including two walls of sliding doors and the outdoor patios — but the inside is finally starting to feel like home. Can’t wait to share more in the coming weeks as we fine tune and finish up.

Big change for the fireplaces this week! We had custom mantels made of stained white oak and mounted them on the white painted brick. I love how you can see the patterns in the brick. The new mantels are pretty chunky (they had to be to cover those original brick mantels!), but once we add some décor, we think they’ll settle in nicely. The new gas inserts are installed and ready to go and it feels lighter and entirely more contemporary in the rooms. I’m itching to get decorating but we have a few more steps to go.

Showing pics of before and after.

A little door glow-up in the works! The old colonial-style door is on its way out, making room for a new look that leans into clean lines and mid-century modern charm. The new door just arrived (still in its packaging, waiting patiently in the driveway), and I can already envision the transformation. It’s a small change with a big design impact—can’t wait to see it installed!

Lots of great progress around the house these past 2 weeks! While most projects aren’t quite finished, we’re finally starting to see how everything is shaping up—and it’s so exciting to watch it come together. Doors are being hung, tile is going in, tambour paneling is taking shape, and countertops are getting installed. It’s all starting to feel real now! Stay tuned… the finish line is getting closer!

Apparently…I’m building a small scullery. Who knew?
(And honestly—who even knew what a scullery was? Not me.)

"Typically thought of as an overflow kitchen, sculleries were common in the past—but are making a resurgence in kitchen design now."

It turns out, this once-awkward space between the kitchen and family room is becoming something that might be quite lovely. Originally, it was open—but if you were on the sunken family room side, you’d practically need stilts to reach the counter. So, we drywalled it in to create a clean wall in the family room and a tucked-away nook off the hallway entrance to the kitchen. Once done, it will serve as a combo wine and coffee bar.

It already has a wine fridge and a sink (obviously essentials), and soon it’ll have a pretty tile backsplash, floating shelf, wine glasses, coffee mugs, and my go-to coffee maker. We’re also adding sliding panel doors with a tambour-inspired look, to hide the room when not in use.

What I didn't realize is that I’m leaning into a whole design trend - Emma Taubenfeld explains it better than I can in the Martha Stewart magazine article that I linked below. Apparently, sculleries are making a comeback! Who knew my inner designer had such good instincts? 😉

Sharing a before pic, a progress shot and one of the door panels coming—more when it’s finished!

Landscaping in the front is in and it’s already bringing the clean, modern look we were going for—Scandinavian simplicity with a Colorado twist. Still to come: lighting, a new front door, paint touch up and resurfacing the front patio. But it’s starting to feel like us.

I added a picture of the rock that we used in the front yard. We were able to pull a lot of that rock from around the front and the back of the house to fill in the big area - and I’m told by neighbors that it is unique to the community and something that you can’t buy anywhere. I’ll need to learn more about it.

Swipe to see the transformation—I included a before shot comparison to show how far we’ve come!

Two fireplaces, one big transformation!

We took the plunge and painted over the original red brick—both now fresh, bright, and white. Gas inserts are officially installed, and they’re already making the space feel cozy and modern.

Our custom white oak mantels are ready to go, but we’re holding off on hanging them until the rest of the house catches up a bit. Still, fun to see these beauties take shape!

Big day at the house — our new metal railings are going up! Definitely a step up from the old colonial wood spindles… and let’s be honest, way safer than the past few weeks of walking dangerously without any railings at all. Progress feels good (and much less wobbly)!

Cue the gasp… yes, I painted over the wood.
And I have zero regrets.

This room had good bones (and that giant window!) but it was time to let it breathe. The 80s had a good run, but we’re headed in a brighter, lighter direction now.

We’re using Benjamin Moore — which makes me smile because my Aunt Darlene always insisted it was the only paint worth using. Feels like she’s cheering me on with every wall we paint.

Before + progress pics below… can’t wait for the final reveal!

Kitchen update!

We’re doubling the size of the kitchen — which is exciting, but made the design a little tricky because the new space is long. Really long. After a lot of thought, we decided to go with two islands instead of one, keeping the all-important “kitchen triangle” between the sink, fridge, and stove.

Fun fact: we’ll end up with three sinks when it’s done!

Since the new addition doesn’t bump out into the back yard as far as the original kitchen, we couldn’t line everything up perfectly. So we’re lining up the dark quartz island counters, but letting the cabinetry of the two islands sit at slightly different points.

One island will have seating, the other won’t — a little unconventional, but we think it’ll work!

To add warmth and texture, we’re also mixing surfaces and using Tambour paneling under both islands. We’ve put a lot of thought into this — can’t wait to see it come to life!

Project update!

We decided to add shiplap to the ceiling in our family room — and I’m already loving how it’s starting to transform the space. There’s something about adding wood to a ceiling that instantly brings a sense of warmth and coziness to a room. Since we want this to be one of the coziest spots in the house, it felt like the perfect choice.

We’re planning to finish it off with white milk paint, which I love not just for the look, but for what it is:

Milk paint is one of the oldest types of paint, made from milk protein (casein), lime, and natural pigments. It’s completely non-toxic, biodegradable, and gives a beautiful matte, old-world finish that fits the relaxed, welcoming vibe we’re going for.

I added a reference picture for what the ceiling is going to look like.

Can’t wait to share more pics once it’s done!

I’ll share more photos once the landscaping is finished, but here’s a peek at the house with fresh paint!

Good news/bad news: I had petitioned the HOA to allow the darker trim color on the siding around the large windows, and my painters remembered that request—so they painted it as shown in the second photo. But since the HOA hadn’t approved it - in fact, they said “no” - I had it repainted with the lighter color.

Now that I have photos of both versions, I’m planning to go back to the HOA and ask again. I really think the darker broader trim looks so much better.

What do you think?
