New EU Travel Rules: What’s Changing and When!

Big changes are coming for UK travellers heading to Europe! From October 2025, the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) means you’ll need to provide biometric data (a facial image and fingerprints) the first time you enter the Schengen Area. This will replace passport stamps and help make future crossings quicker and easier.

Then, from late 2026, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will also kick in. This means you’ll need to get travel authorisation before your trip – essentially a quick online form with some basic personal details, travel plans, and a few security questions. The good news? Most applications will be approved in just a few minutes.

Did you know the airport liquid rules are changing?

Most of us will be familiar with the requirement to remove electronic items or liquids from your bag when going through airport security, well this has now changed at many (though not all) UK airports.

New scanning equipment now means you won't have to remove laptops or tablets or put your liquid items of up to 100ml in plastic bags.

This is now in place at London Gatwick, London City, Luton, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh and several other regional airports. It is not yet fully in place at London Heathrow, Manchester or Southampton though they are working on its implementation.

We also expect to see the 100ml liquid rule removed in summer this year - I'll update you when it is!
