John Milne with his sculpture ‘Kiss’

John Milne was a prominent member of the St Ives group of artists and worked with Barbara Hepworth as an assistant for two years.

He was a little known artist in St Ives at the time but his work is simply beautiful. He said of his work:

‘I often cast works with more than one type of finish in order to be absolutely sure that the final result is the most perfect that I can obtain.’

🪁🪁Today is St Ives Kite Festival!🪁🪁
What a great day to go to the Island and join in with everyone flying their kites between 1-3pm. The sky will be full of colour!

St Ives Art Tours loves the kite festival and will be there.🪁💖

These two paintings of kites in the sky are by Wilhelmina Barns Graham, we’re guessing she loved to watch the kites flying on Porthmeor Beach!🪁

‘Fun Day Kites and Balloons St Ives’ 1998
‘Kite Series 4’ 1975-6

‘The Fisherman’s Farewell’ 1928. Christopher Wood.

What a wonderful painting looking back at the time when St Ives was a fishing harbour.

In the background you can see Smeatons Pier with the two lighthouses and, further along, the three arches. The luggers on the sea awaiting the fishermen casting off from the shore ready for their days catch. The fisherman in the foreground, about to depart, is said to be Ben Nicholson with his wife Winifred and their son Jake.💖

Take a stroll around St Ives and find out more with Nicky, ‘A Walk Amongst Artists’ tour starts today from the library at 10.30am.

‘Contrapuntal Form’ 1950-51. Barbara Hepworth.

Hepworth was invited to make a sculpture for the Festival of Britain in 1951. The photographs show Hepworth working on the 11ft sculpture in her garden here in St Ives, the sculpture was carved from Irish blue limestone. After the festival, in 1953, it was presented to the new town of Harlow in Essex.

Nicky’s tour today, ‘Barbara Hepworth: Bronze, Marble, Stone’, starts at 10.30am and looks at the life, loves and sculptures of the artist.
