"It has come to the point where an eruption could start at any time," says Hildur María Friðriksdóttir, a natural hazard expert at the Icelandic Meteorological Agency, in an interview with mbl.is about the situation on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

The Norwegian Meteorological Agency issued an announcement on Thursday that an eruption could start even less than 30 minutes in advance, possibly in the area between Stóra-Scógfell and Hagafell.

Sigríður says that the earthquake that happened last night occurred where there was an eruption in January and there was also activity where the eruptions occurred in December and now in February.

"This maybe tells us which areas are the weakest." Landrisið continues and there have been no changes in it and no unrest is measurable at present. The situation is unchanged. There is an imminent eruption in the next few days and that is what we are prepared for," says Sigríður.

A dead porcupine was found at Ölfusá earlier today. Emergency technician Valdimar Gunnarsson was on his way from a project with his colleague Anna Lilja when he caught sight of the whale by the river bank.

Due to the instability in the Red Sea, there will be fewer arrivals of cruise ships to Iceland next summer than planned. This is confirmed by Sigurður Jökull Ólafsson, Faxaflóhafn's marketing manager.

The arrival of cruise ships in Reykjavík this summer is estimated at 255, but in the summer of 2023 they were 264. There are 90 ships expected, compared to 99 last year. Some of the ships come to ports several times after round trips around the country. Cruise ship passengers were 306,311 last year, but it is estimated that they will be almost 300,000 this summer.

The good news, says Sigurður, is that of this number, it is estimated that over 150,000 will be exchange passengers. Does that mean passengers who come to Iceland by plane and board the ships in Reykjavík. They disembark in Reykjavík after the cruise and fly home.

The next few days and nights can get cold in the houses in Suðurnes. The bypass pipe along the Njarðvíkur pipe broke and cannot be repaired at the moment.

The Civil Defense directs the residents of Suðurnesj to use electricity sparingly, but there could be power outages in many parts of Suðurnesj this evening due to the load.

The announcement states that HS Veitna's electrical distribution system is not designed for house heating and therefore cannot withstand high load points. Is it repeated that residents use electricity sparingly? Will it make a difference for the next few days.
