Arrived in Karuizawa yesterday afternoon. In addition to the Japanese national bird, Green Pheasant, Chestnut-eared Bunting, Chestnut-cheeked Starling and others were observed.
Local people told me that pheasants are found everywhere, but since they can only be seen in Japan, they are very popular with birdwatchers from overseas.

Japan is in the midst of the summer bird migration season. Blue-and-White Flycatcher, Narcissus Flycatcher, Japanese Robin, Siberian Blue Robin and others have been recorded from various locations. They will be on their way to their breeding grounds and will be singing beautifully until around June.

We have prepared a package tour for 2025-2026. We invite you to join us in Japan for birding in May and June, when the fresh green is beautiful and the summer birds are easy to see.

Brown Dipper: widely distributed in Japan from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and can be seen anywhere in mountain streams. It is one of the earliest birds to breed in Japan, with the breeding season starting around February.

New tours for 2025-2026 have been added.

Peregrine Falcon: a bird of wide distribution worldwide, but also widely distributed in Japan; displays associated with guard formation are common from February onwards, with courtship behaviour and mating in March. This pair failed to breed last year and we hope they will successfully raise their young this year.

Japanese Sparrowhawk: I heard that it had migrated again this year to a relatively nearby park, a 30-minute drive away, so I went to see it. When I went to see it last autumn, I couldn't see the male at all in the shadows of the trees, but it perched on a prominent tree branch and was easily seen. Hopefully they will be successful in raising their young again this year.

Olive-backed Pipit: the campsite was completely empty of people on a rainy day and several Olive-backed Pipits were busy foraging for food. Although more memorable in summer for their powerful songs in and around subalpine forests, they are a familiar bird that is often seen in winter in open pine forests and elsewhere.

Grey Wagtail: a bird widely distributed in Eurasia and common in Japan in rivers and rice paddies in flat to mountainous areas. The male and female look similar, but the throat of the male turns black during the breeding season and the yellow colouration of the breast and belly becomes brighter.
The yellow colouration of the abdomen is thought to be the origin of the name, but the English name is derived from the grey colouration of the back.
When I was often abroad on business, I encountered this bird in Thailand and Malaysia in winter and saw it in Bhutan during the migratory season, and was amazed at the wide distribution of this bird.

Pale Thrush (male): the head of light-ink coloured males varies from individual to individual and is probably much darker in older males. The bird gives the impression of being nervous and wary, but this one we met in Kyushu spent a long time foraging for food in an open area.

Japanese Murrelet: many Alcids spend much of the year at sea and are not usually seen very often. This bird is no exception, and there do not seem to be many records, especially in winter. The first time I went to see this bird was about 20 years ago. I was very impressed by the way it entered the small fishing harbour and quickly chased small fish.
Thanks to a tour started by a local fisherman, I have more chances to see it than ever before, and in February and March, the chances of seeing it are much higher. It was a very impressive bird that we hope to see again next year if we get the chance.

Hooded Crane and Common Crane: the clouds in the background were perfectly positioned, and when I set my camera on the soaring crane, one Common Crane was in the flock. From a distance they all look the same species, but the Common Crane is slightly larger and has a paler overall colouration.
A few Common Crane winter in Izumi, Kagoshima, each year, but they can be surprisingly hard to spot when mixed in with the thousands of Hooded Crane.
