Yesterday, June 21st, was "World Giraffe Day" as designated in 2014 by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. The day is celebrated on the longest day of the year in honor of the tallest animal on the planet.

There are 3 subspecies of Giraffe living in Kenya:
1. Reticulated- these live in the Northern regions of Kenya and have rectangular shaped coat patterns
2. Masai- they live in the Southern regions of Kenya and have irregular star-shaped coat patterns
3. Rothschild's- they live in very small groups throughout central Kenya. The Giraffe Sanctuary breeds this type of giraffe for release.

Now you're aware of the "Big 5", but what about the "Ugly 5"?

They are the Wildebeest, Hyena, Marabou Stork, Warthog, and Vulture.

The "Ugly 5" are considered the least photogenic of all the animals in Africa. Despite their looks, each play an important role in maintaining a balanced ecosystem and have specialized features that assist them in that job.

Do you know about the "Big 5" in Kenya?

They are the lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and cape buffalo.

We were lucky to see all of them during our 9-night safari through 4 national parks.

Wildebeest run all the time for no apparent reason. The guides say that they're indecisive and just can't figure out where they want to be.

Today's Nairobi adventure started with a visit to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. There, they care for orphaned young elephants and black rhinos with the aim to release them when they are old enough to survive and are accepted into a wild herd.

Next, we went to the Giraffe Centre, where they breed the Rothschild Giraffe as part of a repopulation plan. The calves are eventually released into a couple of the national parks where they are establishing some herds of this rare subspecies.
