It’s almost time for the cubs to leave the Den -soon they will be coming to the Cabin.
ABR Daily Update-April 26, 2025-Bears on the Move 🐻
Weather: 80F (27C) Humidity 64%, Partly cloudy.🌤️
Most black bear families in our area have left or are ready to leave their dens. The “big move” will continue over the next few weeks as mother bears introduce their cubs to the world. It’s a big place, and little bears have to be strong enough to keep up with Mom as she forages for food. She’s everything to them: lunch bar, warmth, and safety-so staying close to her is imperative.
The cubs are about three months old, just sprouting baby teeth. They can’t eat solid food yet and are completely dependent on their mother’s milk. They are also tiny, ambulatory containers of curiosity and mischief, and Mother Bear will have her paws full.
We’re sharing links to four videos from the North American Bear Center in Ely, Minnesota. Recorded in 2013 via den cams, they provide the best documentary evidence of black bear den behavior we’ve ever seen. There's a microphone inside the den recording ambient sounds; notice how quiet the bears are most of the time. Noise attracts attention-something black bear cubs don’t want… unless they are hungry or frightened. Then they scream so loudly Mama can hear them three counties over. Very effective!
We’ve selected clips from four dates in April 2013. In the last clip, Mother Lily and her cubs, Ellie and Eli, leave their den for the last time. The cubs are tiny, but Lily will take good care of them.
We admire mother bears for their seemingly endless patience both inside and outside the den. How they cope with energetic tykes bent on self-destruction is beyond us. To Mother Bears everywhere, we award The Golden Honey Pot for their outstanding care of boisterous fur balls.🍯
*A puzzle: cubs are responsible for the premature greying of many curators. That’s a true fact. Why then aren’t mother bears covered in grey fur?🤔
