A very Seattle weekend was inspired by Death Cab for Cutie's Plans 20th anniversary show.

We had a multi-modal bus + TriMet + Amtrak + bike journey from Hood River and stayed in Frelard.

Mark of Bluesky ! fame organized a small tour of the new waterfront trail and car-free Pike's Place (FINALLY) and it was so great to see and hear about all of his advocacy, namely the bill legalizing shared streets in Washington, a first for the country.

Andrea met us for Death Cab show because Annika got double booked as a camp counselor. It was cool to see Nation of Language open up and in such a big venue, but I prefer the smaller venues. Hearing "Plans" sequentially followed by songs from other albums after, was so good. Ben's voice is still perfect.

3 days of great food, music and hilly bike rides was good for our soul.

By inspiring families to see towns, trails and cities by bike on vacation, we hope to reverse this trend and children in America discover their bike as a household tool again.

I did a run to Walmart and made friends with a few folks who had questions about the Brompton.

"Keep the rubber side down!" said my checkout guy. He had toured all 50 states by motorcycle and loved that I was getting groceries by bike.

At least the have sidewalks.

Riding a car-free Going-to-the-Sun Road was the hardest challenge as a bike tourist, but 💯 pay-off on Father's Day and the week we celebrated our 21st anniversary and my parents' 50th.

Logistics:
✔️ 8 adults, 6 children, 2-15 years old
✔️ 7 E-bikes, 2 acoustic bikes, trailer and trailer bike
✔️ 3 of the E-bikes were fat tires and one of those was a long tail
✔️ Bike shuttle trailer can hold bikes with tires less than 3" wide
✔️ Only 1 of us had a vehicle pass
✔️ 1 vehicle bike rack that could hold fat tire bikes
✔️ 👡 1 sandal saved the day as an epic McGruber hack - the fat tire longtail hanging on the vehicle rack would have scraped on the pavement so we lodged 2 flip flops in the wheel well to lift it up and it held for the 16 mile drive to the trailhead
✔️ My Dad and brother-in-law drove the the 3 fat bikes to the trailhead and miraculously found a parking spot
✔️ 4 moms, 2 dads and 6 kids rode the shuttle the trailhead

I can remember 4 times when I thought we would fail or some of us wouldn't be able to ride. We worked as a team to get us there and I will never forget how it was silent smiles when we rode past the car-free gate onto Going-to-the-Sun Road.

My favorite parts of the ride:
✨ seeing all the grandsons quietly take in the scenery or fall asleep
✨ "WOW!" to the views and rock formations
✨ Riding through the Loop tunnel
✨ 🍻 cheers in front of Heavens Peak
✨ Getting wet 💦 from Weeping Wall (and slipping on the algae)
✨ Kyle, Annika and I riding in formation past people, 20-30 mph downhill
✨ "This is so much better without worrying about cars!" said my Dad on Father's Day.

🪣 bucket list bike ride down and on the LAST DAY before they opened Glacier National Park to cars!

Our daughter is now 15 and has been using an E-bike for 2 years to get herself to work, school and social life.

On this 4th of July, we celebrate E-bikes and the freedom they give to our teens.

We have found ourselves in the position of subject matter experts for E-bikes and our newest review is freshly published on Outside Magazine!

A family of experienced bikers took the best folding electric bikes out on paved trails, city streets, and off-roading.

I am headed home after an inspiring visit to Salt Lake City and meetings with the City Thread leadership group.

Hood River is joining a cohort of SLC, New Orleans, Burlingame CA, Columbus OH, Bentonville AK and Milwaukee WI.

I learned about coalition building, successful bond measures and goal setting.

The motivation to get it done with this group is real and I hope Hood River hosts a future City Thread meeting.

City Thread leadership gathering day 1 📸

After a packed day of bike touring Salt Lakes City's infrastructure and hearing how they have done it with a bond measure and GRADE A leadership and staff, we were treated to exotic 🦓 🍸 cocktails at Ivy and Varley.

My Brompton brother in SLC is a volunteer for the advocacy organization, Sweet Streets!

To finish off a great day, I treated myself to a solo date at the best Mexican food in America, Red Iguana.

Hot 🔥 out here in Salt Lake but these bus islands protecting the bike lane and serving as a resting spot at stoplights 🚦 are super cool.
