THE NORTHERN CAPE is South Africa's largest province, occupying over 30% of the country's land area, yet it has the smallest population. Known for its arid, vast landscapes, the province is bordered by Namibia and Botswana and features the Kalahari Desert, the Orange River, and Namaqualand. Kimberley is the capital, while Upington and Springbok are key towns.
Key Attractions & Highlights:
*National Parks: Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (lions, arid wilderness), Augrabies Falls National Park, Namaqua National Park (famous for spring wildflowers), and the UNESCO-listed Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape.
*Historical Sites: Kimberley’s Big Hole and Mine Museum, and the Wonderwerk Cave.
*Activities: Adventure 4x4 trails, canoeing on the Orange River, hiking, birdwatching, and stargazing in the clear, arid skies.
*Cultural Experience: Nama culture, local cuisine, and craft markets.
The Northern Cape has many set Routes for the visitor to travel with or without a Guide, a self-drive tour. Here are a few mentioned:
1. The Historic Copper Mine Route - dating back to 1836
2. The Historic Diamond Mine Route - Alluvial diamonds were
mined from 1942 from Kleinzee village
3. The Nama Culture Route - Enthusiasts can experience Nama
Culture by eating dinner cooked in a traditional iron pot and
sleeping in a Nama Hut
4. The Pilgrimage Route - Tourists can visit several Missionary
stations, such as the Church of England, the Roman Catholic
Church, the Methodist Church, the Jewish Society, and
many other Church organisations. In different towns or villages
5. Mountain Hiking Trails and 4x4 self-drive desert drives with a
experienced guide.
6. Amazing Stargazing Trails - Beneath the Milky Way, you will find
the Karoo towns of Sutherland, Williston and Fraserburg. As
there is little light "pollution" in this area and cloudless nights,
it is ideal for stargazing. Sutherland is situated 1,600 metres
above sea level and is also home to the largest astronomical
telescope in the Southern Hemisphere. 'SALT'
