TOMORROW is the Fourth of July! 🇺🇸 All of these events are free and open to the public.

A number of events are happening this coming Fourth of July in honor of the Declaration of Independence that created our nation. The events are scheduled as a “Freedom Journey,” in which guests can participate in all or some programs, beginning at the Battlefield, proceeding to the Monument, and ending at the ceremony at the Town Hall.

It is a pleasant drive between the sites, upon which drivers can cross over three covered bridges. (Driving directions available at the Monument.) Motorcyclists are especially invited to participate. The day finishes with music, vendors, and a fireworks display at Willow Park.

The day finishes with music, vendors, and a fireworks display at Willow Park. All of these events are free and open to the public.

The events begin at 10:30 am at the Bennington Battlefield with Interpretive Programs Manager, David Pitlyk, introducing re-enactor Sean Considine, as British General “John Burgoyne.” General Burgoyne will give a brief presentation, after which a toast will be offered to American independence. The program continues at 11:30 am at the Bennington Battle Monument and a reading of the Declaration of Independence by Mike Chapman will occur at noon. At 1:00 pm in front of the Bennington Town offices, there will be a bell ringing ceremony and musket salute in honor of the 1963 congressional resolution declaring "that the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence should be observed each year by the ringing of bells throughout the United States... in the afternoon of the 4th day of July.”

The bell is from the US Navy aircraft carrier the USS Bennington. The bell will be rung thirteen times by Bennington Rotary members, each representing one of the original 13 states. A fourteenth bell ringer is chosen to honor Vermont as the fourteenth state. The Bennington Rotary chooses a group or individual each year that is outstanding in our community to be the ringer.

Past recipients chosen as the “14th Bell Ringer” include the members of the Bennington Fire Department, the Bennington Elks Lodge, Oldcastle Theater, the Bennington Historical Society, the Bennington Rescue Squad, the Vermont National Guard, the North Bennington Village School, the MAU Chamber Singers, and Patricia Johnson, RN-SVMC. This year to honor Vermont, the Vermont Veterans Home has been chosen to be the 14th bell ringer.

After the ceremony, the public is invited to ring the bell as well.

Beginning at 5:00 pm at Willow Park in Bennington, there will be a variety of food and craft vendors. The Crossover Cloggers will perform from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm followed by live music from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Fireworks will be at Willow Park and will begin at dusk, approximately 9:30 pm. In the case of extreme weather, the rain date for fireworks only will be Saturday, July 5. The Town thanks Market 32 / Price Chopper, Casella Waste Management, MSK Engineering, and the Bennington Banner for their sponsorship of the fireworks.

Bennington - Vermont Begins Here

Bennington, Vermont. An idyllic Vermont Town tucked in the Southwest Corner of Vermont’s Green Mountains.

As Bennington’s first town, chartered in 1749, Vermont truly did begin here all those years ago. Couple that with the fact that we are located just over the border from Massachusetts 10 miles to the South and New York 5 miles to the West, Bennington is the perfect place to begin your Vermont experience.

A vibrant Arts Scene. Rich revolutionary war history. Three Colleges. Four Museums. Year round outdoor activities. Craft Brewers. A real Main Street experience with Independent shop owners and one-of-a-kind finds. Home of highly acclaimed events such as the Southern Vermont Garlic and Herb Festival or the Winter Wings and HomeBrew Festival. We hope you will come see us soon!
