There are 16 unique subspecies of black bears worldwide and within British Columbia there are 6 subspecies, more diverse than anywhere else in the world. Here on Vancouver Island we have a healthy population of 7000 or more black bears inhabiting this island and surrounding islands, named Ursus Americanus Vancouveri or the Vancouver Island Black Bear.

To learn more about the bears of Vancouver Island, join our guides on our Clayoquot Wildlife Safari in Tofino. Tours depart daily between May 1st-September 31st.

Bear watching season is slowly drawing to a close for us here on the West Coast and we just want to thank all our amazing guests for such a great season. It’s been a pleasure to share these majestic animals with so many of you from all over the world.
