🗣️Meet Charlie, a lacrosse player who took on Costa Rica with SAA in 2024 🇨🇷

“During my time in Costa Rica, I had the opportunity to experience many firsts, including surfing and ziplining. However, the most meaningful part of my experience was developing a lasting bond with my host family, a connection I will always treasure. This internship allowed me to gain a comprehensive understanding of the veterinary profession, which has significantly strengthened both my veterinary school applications and my confidence during interviews. One of the most impactful lessons I took away was the appreciation the local community showed for our efforts to communicate in Spanish. Their encouragement motivated me to continue improving my language skills. Overall, this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I would eagerly relive.”

💰✈️ Money matters while abroad—let’s make sure you’re ready!

Traveling on a budget doesn’t mean missing out—it just means spending wisely! Whether you’re studying, interning, or volunteering abroad, having a solid plan can help you stress less and enjoy more. Our team of former student-athletes has a few go-to tips for managing your money overseas.

👇Top Budgeting Tips:

1️⃣ Set your personal budget – Do some research on the cost of basic day-to-day items in your country, or ask our SAA team for their expertise! It helps to know what you’re willing to spend before embarking on your adventure abroad.
2️⃣ Know the local currency – Check out the current exchange rates & learn what the bills and coins look like so you don’t overpay by accident. Knowledge is power.
3️⃣ Bring both cash & card – Some places abroad are cash-only, others are card-friendly. Having both gives you flexibility. We normally advise students to bring $100 worth of cash (in USD or local currency) in their carry-on and then to exchange more once in country.
4️⃣ Exchange currency wisely – Airport exchanges are convenient, but pricey. Local ATMs will give you better rates, but be aware they will normally charge a small fee. Money belts are also a great investment!
5️⃣ Tell your bank you’re traveling – This helps avoid blocked cards or surprise fees. Some banks have partners abroad that don’t charge for ATM withdrawals!

💡 Pro Tip: Keep a small amount of local cash in your carry-on—you’ll want it for things like taxis, snacks, or tips as soon as you land.

🎒✈️ Packing for your next adventure?

Whether you’re heading abroad with SAA or traveling solo, packing smart can make all the difference! Our team of well-traveled former student-athletes has top tips to help you pack like a pro and travel stress-free.

👇 Top Packing Tips:

1️⃣ Pack light & versatile—Stick to essentials & choose mix-and-match outfits. If it’s in your budget, save room for local shopping & souvenirs! One small checked bag + carry-on backpack is PLENTY for 3-4 weeks.
2️⃣ Roll, don’t fold—Maximize space & minimize wrinkles. Utilize the inside of your shoes, too.
3️⃣ Carry-on must-haves—Important documents, change of clothes, & items of value.
4️⃣ Carry a basic first-aid kit—Band-aids, aspirin, anti-nausea meds, & disinfectant can be lifesavers. You can find most OTC medications abroad, but if there’s a brand you know & like, it’s better to pack it.
5️⃣ Small gifts or donations—This is optional, but it’s a great way to give back while traveling. Ask our team if you have ideas or questions on what’s OK to bring.

“I can’t stress enough how meaningful this experience was to me. Like most interns, I was skeptical to travel across the world alone. But in less than a month, I made some of the best memories of my life. I made new friends, gained valuable life skills, learned about local culture, and even continued training for my sport. This opportunity pushed me outside my comfort zone and I was able to adapt to a new culture and lifestyle. It truly was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will cherish forever.”
