HERE IS THE GET DOWN!!
Río Amarillo Airport: The government says the existing airport will be brought back into operation. The infrastructure has already been assessed, and officials say they are talking with airlines interested in serving Copán. Asfura said he expects it could be available “in a few months,” but no opening date, airline or confirmed route has yet been announced. EHISA is expected to make the necessary investment to make the airport operational.
* Possible Guatemala connection: Asfura specifically said the airport could strengthen tourism connections between Copán and Guatemala. Separately, SIT is studying a fourth border crossing with Guatemala, together with road and border-facility improvements. Again, these are plans/studies, not completed projects yet.
* L65 million for Copán: Asfura announced L65 million to modernize the Copán archaeological site. The aim is preservation as well as improving the visitor experience and attracting more international tourism.
* New Visitor Center: Honduras and Japan signed an agreement for a new visitor center at the archaeological park. Japan is providing approximately L17.5 million, and the project is expected to take about one year. Plans include modern visitor facilities; reporting also mentions online ticketing, improved security/cameras and technology.
* 1,600-year celebration: Copán is commemorating 1,600 years since K’inich Yax K’uk’ Mo’ established the dynasty in AD 426. Events are expected to continue through September 2027, which gives Copán a useful tourism story well beyond this week.
