Gulf Air is coming back to the US. Starting October 1, the Bahraini flag carrier will launch nonstop flights from Bahrain to New York JFK using its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
The new service marks Gulf Air’s longest route to date, stretching nearly 11,000 kilometers and clocking in at almost 14 hours westbound. Flights will operate three times per week, landing at JFK’s Terminal One. This will be Gulf Air’s first US route since 1997, when it briefly served New York with the A340.
The move is bold. Demand between Bahrain and New York is tiny, with just 33 daily passengers recorded last year. Gulf Air will need to rely heavily on connecting traffic, especially from South Asia. But that market tends to yield low fares. The timing is also tight. Tickets are already on sale, but with just a few months to build awareness, load factors will be closely watched.
Group CEO Jeffrey Goh has said profitability is now essential. The airline turns 75 this year and wants its US relaunch to mark a turning point. Still, the risks are high and competition fierce.
