Project Riese. In World War II, a vast tunnel system was driven into the Owl mountains near the village of Walim (Wüstewaltersdorf) at the behest of the German government. It is believed that it was meant to serve as the Führer's Headquarter replacing Wolf's Lair in East Prussia. There are links to another tunnel complex beneath Książ Castle (Schloss Fürstenstein), about 30 km (19 miles) to the northwest. Parts of the extended complex are accessible and can be visited with a tour guide.
