The South African Spaza and Tuckshop Association (SASTA) began in 1997 as a small club, became an official association in 1999, and was formally launched in 2000 with the support of then-Mayor Mogase. Today, under the leadership of Mam’ Rose Nkosi, SASTA represents thousands of small informal businesses—from tuck shops and spaza shops to general dealers, hair salons, and clothing stalls—thriving in cities, small towns, taxi ranks, townships, and local communities.
