🍂 August finishes on Monday, and September is the month the rooftops are actually good.
I say that every year and every year somebody tells me I am wrong, so here is the case.
The heat drops about ten degrees, which is the difference between sitting outside at three in the afternoon and hiding indoors until seven. The sea is at its warmest of the entire year, warmer than July, because it takes the whole summer to heat up and then holds it. The queues disappear. Everything that was full for eight straight weeks has tables again, and the staff have recovered enough to be pleased to see you.
The flights are cheaper. The light in the evening goes gold rather than white. And the terraces that spent August turning people away start doing the thing they are actually for, which is being somewhere you can sit for three hours.
The case for August is the atmosphere. Feria, everybody out, the whole city awake at midnight, and a kind of energy that September genuinely does not have.
The case for September is that you can get a seat, and it is still 28 degrees at nine in the evening.
I know which one I would book. I also know which one sells out first, and it is not the one I would book.
Which month do you come for?
