Local farm stand eggs? Yes please!

The simple act of buying local eggs makes a powerful statement. Along with getting the absolutely freshest product you are also supporting small-scale agriculture which promotes a strong rural economy. You may be contributing to a child's 4-H education on a historic farm or helping a group of adults who are passionate about animal welfare. Perhaps you'll meet the rockstar hens up close or make a new (human) friend in the process! Community grows through small actions.

Last week brought a pleasant sojourn in southern Lehigh County driving through rolling hills which dissolve into verdant farmland. This primarily rural area contains historic structures dating to the early 1700s and pocket farms peppered throughout a landscape of complex watersheds. Macungie is a Lenape word roughly translated as "feeding place of the bears". Progressing east towards Alburtis, the bucolic countryside is met by massive warehouses and industrial facilities which make up a new false horizon. Nearby residents, including black bears, no longer see the natural terrain, save for a few landscaped visual breaks required by land use boards. A million sunrises have been replaced by high-pressure sodium lights for so-called outdoor security. Ask which scenario fits your lifestyle and those of your children's children.

Excerpt from an upcoming work, A New False Horizon.

Riegelsville Station on the Bel-Del Line. A few locals may remember similar scenes six decades ago. The Belvedere-Delaware Railroad, constructed between 1850 and 1855 accommodated both passenger and freight service between Trenton and Belvedere, NJ. Riegelsville Station was built in 1853 serving industry and populations on both sides of the Delaware River. Riegel Paper would have a large mill and an associated community nearby. Several other businesses throughout the lower Musconetcong Valley were also served by this line. Riegelsville also operated as a primary mail stop for Holland and Pohatcong Townships to the east. But time marches on. The widespread adoption of the automobile reduced commuter service which ended wholly in Riegelsville in 1960 with freight service ending a few decades later. Sadly, arson took the original station in 1969. Fortunately the story did not end there. Various Warren County government and non-profit entities worked together on a vision for the historic station missing from the landscape for 50 years. Eclectic Architecture, LLC has done a magnificent job recreating this Warren County landmark which has seen weekend train excursions from Phillipsburg since 2023. While it may serve a different purpose than the original, the station is a visual reminder of the storied past of Riegelsville NJ. All aboard!
