John Coltrane, a name synonymous with the transformative power of jazz. As one of the most influential saxophonists and composers in music history, Coltrane's contribution to jazz reshaped the genre and set a new standard for improvisation, depth, and emotion. Known for his groundbreaking work on albums like "Giant Steps" and "A Love Supreme", Coltrane's sound was more than just musicโ€”it was a spiritual journey.

๐Ÿ’กBorn in North Carolina in 1926, Coltrane moved to Philadelphia and later to New York City, becoming a key figure in the Harlem jazz scene. His innovations, including complex chord progressions and his iconic "sheets of sound" technique, continue to inspire musicians worldwide.

At Harlem Jazz Boxx, we celebrate the legacy of John Coltrane, whose fearless exploration of jazz's boundaries has forever changed the landscape of music. Keep the music alive. Join us on August 8, 2025, for an extraordinary evening with master composer and tuba virtuoso Joseph Daley at the Harlem Jazz Series! Born in Harlem and now celebrating over 55 years in music, Joseph returns to his roots for what promises to be an unforgettable performance.

After five decades as one of jazz's most sought-after sidemen, working alongside legends like Sam Rivers, Carla Bley, Gil Evans, Charlie Haden, Cecil Taylor, and Anthony Braxton, Joseph has emerged as one of contemporary music's most visionary composers and leaders. His groundbreaking work "The Seven Deadly Sins" featuring his Earth Tones Ensemble stunned critics and fans alike, drawing comparisons to immortals like Charles Mingus and Duke Ellington.

Whether performing with his large ensemble, his evocative Ebony Brass Quintet, his World-music influenced Rituals Ensemble, or in intimate solo contexts, Joseph's performances are marked by sheer musicality, deeply-hewn emotion, and jubilant innovation. Don't miss this rare opportunity to experience one of jazz's most extraordinary artists in the neighborhood where his musical journey began.

Mark your calendars and prepare to witness jazz history in the making. Harlem, we're coming home! ๐Ÿ ๐ŸŽต

"Character, not circumstances, makes the man." - Booker T. Washington

At Harlem Roots, we celebrate the wisdom of those who paved the way for change and empowerment. Booker T. Washington was not only a prominent educator and leader, but he also emphasized the importance of personal integrity and perseverance over the external conditions of life. This powerful quote serves as a reminder that who we are is determined by our inner strength, values, and characterโ€”not by the situations we find ourselves in.

Join us in celebrating the trailblazers of the past and let this reminder of strength and character inspire your journey today. Explore more about the figures who shaped the course of history at Harlem Roots and gain insight into their profound impact on society.

In West Africa, the djembe drum is used to bring people together for many purposes: to communicate, celebrate, and motivate. The djembe, a cultural lineage that goes back hundreds of years, is for all humanity to experience. Through the djembe, expression, mindfulness, and joy are cultivated.

Wula Drum's mission is to provide the highest quality West African instruments, performances, instruction, and educational materials. They believe that the way to break down barriers of race and class is through the education of music and dance, environmental awareness, paying higher wages, and supporting sustainable incomes in Guinea as well as the USA.

Wula Drum has performed at countless events over the years, ranging from school assemblies to weddings to large stages, such as half-time shows at the Barclays Center.

The Harlem Meer Performance Festival is free, and all ages are welcome.
