Every campsite in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is tucked into the beautiful boreal forest, but no two spots are exactly the same. Some have massive rock slabs which are perfect for stretching out under the sun or casting a line. Others come with their own little beach. You might find yourself surrounded by towering red pines or scattered aspens. Plus, there are some cool island sites.

Either way, they’re pretty private and primitive in keeping with the wilderness experience.

"What shoes should I bring on my canoe trip?"
We get this one all the time—and the answer is simple: bring two pairs!

💦 Wet Shoes:
These are your go-to kicks for paddling and portaging. They’re going to get wet, so choose something that can handle water AND rough terrain—think trail runners or lightweight hiking shoes that drain well. You’ll even swim in them, so solid grip and support are key.

💨 Dry Shoes:
Once you’re back at camp, you’ll want something dry and comfy to wear with decent support. A pair of lightweight athletic shoes work great—easy to slip on and off for quick tent runs or midnight latrine missions, but sturdy enough to protect your feet from rocks and roots.

🩴Pro tip:
Skip the sandals and don't go barefoot. Cuts, sharp rocks, and the occasional fish hook aren’t worth the risk.
