📍 August plans. Questionable. Necessary. 📍

This August, Krakoff the Map will be slightly less available.

Not because we’ve run out of things to say about Kraków — quite the opposite. We’re off to gather new material. The kind that doesn’t come from guidebooks.

The plan is simple:
a respectable amount of travelling,
a highly unrespectable amount of alcohol,
and just enough questionable decisions to call it “inspiration for September”.

There may be occasional updates — depending on levels of coherence.

We’ll be back with new ideas, fresh energy, and stories that will almost certainly sound better than they actually were.

September should be… interesting.

🌧️ November, mild suffering… and a group that deserved better weather 🌧️

A slightly delayed post — mainly because we needed time to emotionally recover from November. Also, the jacket in the photo tells its own story. A thick one.

Back then, we had the pleasure of guiding a group of 30+ American Jews, flown in from across the United States and accompanied by a rabbi — which meant the discussions were insightful, the questions excellent, and my answers occasionally underperforming.

We started in Kazimierz: Galicia Museum, followed by the Jewish Community Centre, where the educators calmly and professionally explained things that most of Europe is still trying to avoid thinking about before lunch.

Then the former ghetto — quieter, heavier, and refreshingly free of anything resembling “fun facts.” Always a crowd favourite. In a deeply inappropriate sense.

And finally, the Old Town — in freezing rain, because Kraków doesn’t do cheerful endings. It does character-building.

To their credit, the group handled it all with impressive resilience, curiosity, and only minimal visible regret.

Kraków in November: not beautiful, not comfortable, but undeniably honest.

We like to think that’s part of the charm.
Or at least that’s what we tell people.

📍 A recommendation. A suspiciously honest one. 📍

The internet is full of guides. All of them “passionate”, “experienced”, and deeply “in love with the city”. At some point it becomes difficult to tell who actually knows what they’re talking about and who simply photographs well next to a historic building.

So, for a change — someone reliable.

"Przemierzajmy razem Kraków" (“Let’s Explore Kraków Together”) is run by Weronika, a guide who not only knows the city, but can talk about it in a way that doesn’t make you check the time every five minutes… or question your life choices.

No unnecessary theatrics, no cheap tricks — just knowledge, good judgement, and that rare ability to make history sound like something other than a school obligation.

If you’re after a version of Kraków that actually makes sense — not just looks good on photos — it’s well worth a look:

Recommended. With unsettling confidence.

Witam Wszystkich bardzo serdecznie! Nazywam się Weronika Stachnik. Jestem licencjonowaną przewodniczką miejską po Krakowie, nauczycielką historii, edukatorką i przewodniczką muzealną. Zapraszam na wspólne zwiedzanie. Z pasją przemierzajmy razem Kraków!

🎩 When things get official (and slightly less photogenic) 🎩

Every now and then, Krakoff the Map finds itself in situations where taking selfies feels… diplomatically unwise. This was one of those times.

We had the honour of hosting a delegation from the Ministry of Public Security of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, accompanied by the Ambassador — which meant, for once, we tried to behave like a serious organisation. Results were inconclusive.

The programme took us from Kraków to Oświęcim, where history speaks for itself and wisely leaves little room for commentary. Back in the city, we swapped solemn reflection for the quiet absurdity of electric melex rides — gliding from the Main Square through Kazimierz to Podgórze, as one does when showing important guests around without exposing them to unnecessary walking.

No photos, unfortunately. Some meetings are simply not meant for Facebook.

But we like to think Kraków made its usual impression: understated, layered, and quietly confident — much like us, on a good day.

🧳 Heritage, history… and a story coming full circle 🧳

This time, Krakoff the Map took a slightly more serious turn — though not without our usual charm — guiding Jonathan, Nancy, and Abby, an American family of Jewish heritage, back to where it all began: Kielce.

We traced fragments of a past that history tried its best to erase. From the Jan Karski Centre, through the former ghetto, to what remains of the old synagogue — each stop peeling back another layer of a past that’s usually dressed up in softer words than it deserves.

To balance things out (emotionally, not historically), we also visited Chęciny — its castle and synagogue standing there as if nothing particularly tragic had ever happened in the general vicinity. A bold strategy.

It wasn’t about rushing from one highlight to another — but somewhere between silence, reflection, and the occasional dry remark, something quietly meaningful emerged.

Kraków may be our stage. But sometimes, the story takes you elsewhere.

🧭 Krakoff the Map… went off the map badly this time 🧭

In a bold and possibly ill-advised move, Krakoff the Map (i.e. the two of us) ventured beyond our natural habitat and ended up in Stargard for the International Hanseatic Days.

Representatives from across the old Hanseatic League came together to celebrate history, culture, and the fine art of politely competing over whose medieval past is more impressive. We listened intently, nodded respectfully… and quietly remembered that Kraków never needed a league to be relevant.

Charming? Absolutely. Educational? Allegedly. But after a few days among fellow “great cities of the past”, we return home reassured — some places had a golden age...
..and some simply never moved on from it.

🇨🇦 Four Canadians, three districts, and absolutely no sensible route planning 🇨🇦

Recently, we guided four Canadian ladies of Jewish heritage through the Old Town, Kazimierz, and the former Ghetto area.

Several centuries of history were covered, numerous difficult questions were asked, and not a single international incident occurred. A solid day by European standards.

We discussed memory, identity, and humanity’s long-standing tradition of creating problems for future generations and then calling it heritage.

The Canadians remained unfailingly polite throughout, even when confronted with Kraków’s cobblestones — proving every stereotype about Canada is apparently true.

If you'd like to explore the less obvious side of Kraków, come along.

🌍 A meeting of worlds (and questionable decision-making) 🌍

Every now and then, Kraków attracts visitors from places where the sun actually works as intended. This time, we had the pleasure of guiding Juan from the United Arab Emirates 🇦🇪 — a man brave enough to swap desert heat for Polish spring, which is essentially just winter with better PR.

We wandered through the Old Town and up to the Castle, doing what all respectable travellers do: buying souvenirs we don’t need and pretending they hold deep cultural significance. At some point, between a fridge magnet and a mildly overpriced piece of “local craftsmanship,” we also managed to have genuinely interesting conversations about life. Unexpected. Slightly suspicious. But we allowed it.

Juan, as you can see, approved of the experience — or at least of something. The “OK” gesture was noted and will be treated as a legally binding review.

If you’d also like to walk around Kraków, collect objects of dubious necessity, and accidentally reflect on existence, you know where to find us.
