***South Africa & Namibia’s risk level downgraded by Germany***

✅In the latest ministerial vote of the Federal Republic of Germany, with effect from Sunday (August 1), South Africa and Namibia will be downgraded from being classified as “virus variant areas” by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) – the public health institute in Germany – to now being designated areas of “High Risk”.

✅“This means it is now easier to enter Germany from South Africa or Namibia, given that the quarantine period is only ten days instead of fourteen days and can be ended after just five days with a negative PCR test,” explains Lufthansa General Manager Southern Africa & East Africa, Dr André Schulz.

✅Passengers who have been fully vaccinated with approved vaccines and come from High Risk areas do not need to be quarantined at all. Additionally, unlike in virus variant areas, there is no transport ban for travellers without German or EU citizenship.

✅“It is without doubt that this news will have a significant impact on our day to day business, and is welcomed by us all with great excitement and elation.

***Based on these new regulations the airlines of the Lufthansa Group will continuously re-evaluate and adjust our capacity to meet the demand according to our customers’ needs,” said Schulz.***

***Delta is back on the SA track***

Delta Air Lines has resumed its Atlanta-Johannesburg service, with the arrival of the first inbound flight in the late afternoon of Monday, August 2.

The service, which was first launched by Delta in December 2006, will initially operate three times weekly.

Inbound flights will depart Atlanta on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 19h00 and arrive in Johannesburg at 16h30 the following day.

Outbound flights will depart from Johannesburg at 22h55 on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, arriving in Atlanta at 09h15 the following day.

“We are proud of our airline’s 15-year history in South Africa and excited that Delta’s restart between Johannesburg and the US is with our flagship aircraft, offering customers an enhanced on-board experience wherever they sit,” said Amy Martin, Delta’s MD Network Planning.

The route will be operated by Delta’s A350-900neo, which, it says, is 25% more fuel efficient than the Boeing 777 it replaces, helping reduce carbon emissions on Delta’s longest route.

The aircraft is configured with four cabins.

Delta One Suites. Described by one passenger as a hybrid between first-class and business-class product, with complete privacy, personalised service and a fully flat-bed seat with direct aisle access.
Delta Premium Select. This is a separate cabin with more personal space, wider seats with more leg-room and recline, adjustable leg and head rests and an elevated on-board service, with specific meals served.
Delta Comfort+. Preferential seating at the front of the main cabin, with a little more leg-room and specific allocated overhead storage for carry-on items.
Main Cabin. Economy class.
All seats have high-resolution in-seat entertainment screens and personal power ports for every customer, optional access to high-speed 2Ku Wi-Fi connectivity (paid), plus free mobile messaging – it is possible to send text messages (for example, over Watsapp or FB Messenger), but no pictures.

At meal service, all customers get a choice of entrée alongside an appetiser and dessert in addition to a full bar selection or soft drink. Delta One customers can pre-order their meal choice on flights between South Africa and the US (and can look forward to favourites such as Peri Peri chicken or grilled prawns with jasmine rice!)

Travellers on the flight from South Africa can connect to Los Angeles, Washington DC., Miami and New York-JFK, in time for lunch the next day.

Presently, there is no entry to the US, for South Africans for tourism purposes. Entry remains restricted to certain special visa categories and US citizens and permanent residents. Tourists from the US are welcome in South Africa.

✅Vaxxed Brits May Travel Isolation-Free

UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has announced that travellers returning to England from countries on England’s Amber List, and who have been fully vaccinated in the UK, will no longer need to self-isolate for 10 days on their return, from July 19.

But, according to British press reports, these travellers will still need to take a test three days prior to departure when returning from the Amber List country, to ensure they are negative before they travel. They will also have to take another PCR test by the end of day two after arriving back.

Travellers must show their vaccination status on their passenger locator forms and this will need to be checked by the transport operator before travel.

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland usually follow England’s lead, so it is most likely these rules will apply across the UK.

Initially, said the Transport Secretary, the new rule would apply only to those who had been vaccinated in the UK. He had no timeline to indicate when travellers vaccinated in other countries might enter the UK from Amber List countries without the need to self-isolate. “We want to welcome international visitors back to the UK and are working to extend our approach to vaccinated passengers from important markets later this summer, such as the United States and the EU.” He promised to outline a plan on the opening up of the UK to vaccinated people from other countries in the future.

The Minister said the decision was not “just about holidays”, but was intended to help businesses trade and grow and was about supporting the aviation sector, which hundreds of thousands relied on, an industry that the government had backed with £7bn of support through the pandemic. “The only way to actually recover is to allow them to fly and for travel to resume again,” he said.

The UK Government will also, on July 19, remove its current discouragement for people travelling to Amber List countries.

The Minister concluded: “I want to be clear that, as we begin to ease restrictions, travel will not be the same as before. People should continue to check Foreign Office travel advice, travel where possible outside busy weekend times and, importantly, they should expect that their experience at the border will be different because longer waiting times will be necessitated.”
