The Highly Migratory Species (HMS) Management Division of the US National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is requesting comment on the content, usefulness and format of the Atlantic HMS Management-Based Research Needs and Priorities document.

"The document contains a list of near- and long-term research needs and priorities that can be used by individuals and groups interested in Atlantic HMS to identify key research needs, improve management, reduce duplication, prioritize limited funding, and form a potential basis for future funding."

Embarrassed to say that Shark Awareness Day slipped past us yesterday! Like every other day, we hope that global citizens are aware of sharks, aware that they are important to the ecosystems they inhabit, aware of their natural behaviors, aware that some species and populations are being negatively impacted by overfishing, and aware that research and level-headed conservation will lead to sustainable management of sharks, which benefits us all!

In the 18 days the Atlantic federal shark fishery has been open for the Large Coastal Shark management group on the Atlantic side, 10% of the quota = 16 metric tons dressed weight, has been landed and reported. In the Gulf of Mexico region, the same management group, Large Coastal Sharks, reached 101% of the quota and that fishery is now closed. If managers are relying on real time reporting to ensure quotas are not being over reached, wonder how that happened?

A possible alternative to lethal methods of control?

The results of this new study suggest the Sharksafe barrier may be an eco-friendly alternative to shark nets.
