Great news!!!!

United Airlines has today started selling tickets for new direct flights between Washington Dulles Airport (IAD) and Cape Town, becoming the first airline to provide nonstop roundtrip service from the US capital to South Africa. The US Department of Transportation granted the airline three weekly direct flights, which will commence on November 17, 2022. The flights will depart from IAD on Monday, Thursday and Saturday, and from Cape Town on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.

Qantas has good news for South Africans travelling to Perth!

The Australian airline will start flights between Perth and Johannesburg on November 1, operating three flights a week.

This will be the only direct service from South Africa to Western Australia, complementing Qantas’s existing four-times-weekly Johannesburg-Sydney service, which re-started post-pandemic on January 6 this year.

Flights depart Perth at 15h00 and arrive in Johannesburg at 20h15, with a flight duration of 11 hours. Outbound, the Johannesburg flight departs at 22h00 and arrives in Perth at 13h55 the following day, with a duration of 9 hours 55 minutes. The flights will cut more than six hours from the fastest current travel time.

A hidden gem in the UAE

Ras Al Khaimah, is a region that prides itself on its adventure tourism and an 80-minute drive south of Dubai.

Adventure tourists can take part in a variety of outdoor activities, from kayaking through the mangroves and exploring canyons to mountain biking and visiting the Bear Grylls Explorers Camp.

Ras Al Khaimah is also home to the highest mountain in the UAE, Jebel Jais, in the northwestern Hajar range at a height of 1 934m.

Adventure-seekers may like a ride on the world’s longest zipline from the peak, reaching up to 160km/h on a 2.83km line; or go on the Jais Sledder, which reaches up to 40km/h. The total ride takes about eight minutes to cover 1 840m of curves and waves, not unlike a rollercoaster.

Jebel Jais also houses the highest restaurant in the UAE, the 1484 By Puro, 1 484m above sea level.

Proud moment for South Africa

In third place, and highest-ranking city in Africa, is Cape Town. The newspaper says its “topography and geography alone make [it] stand out above the others” and that its beaches, copious sunshine hours and towering Table Mountain, the latter providing the highest view and the biggest green space out of any city in the list, bumped it into a podium position.

A ranking using objective measures has put the Mother City above heavy hitters including Paris, Tokyo, London and New York.

Zanzibar scraps PCRs for vaccinated guests

Fully vaccinated visitors to Zanzibar will no longer be subject to PCR testing on arrival from Friday (April 1).

Proof of a valid vaccination certificate with a QR code is essential. All travellers must also now complete the Travellers Health Surveillance Form within 24 hours of arrival.

Unvaccinated visitors must still present a negative PCR test result, from a test taken within the 72 hours prior to departure.

Unvaccinated children aged five years and younger, as well as transiting passengers, are exempt from the PCR requirement.

Air Belgium is to begin flights to South Africa in September.

The airline will operate two scheduled flights a week from Brussels to Johannesburg and two to Cape Town. One Cape Town flight is direct, the other is linked to the Johannesburg flight.

At this stage, the service is a seasonal one, from September 14, 2022, to March 25, 2023

BREAKING: Mauritius drops PCR tests

Mauritius has dropped the requirement for visitors to take a pre-travel PCR test with a negative result, as a condition of entry to the country.

The move will undoubtedly drive more leisure and business tourism to the island state.
