European flight delays

A strike by Europe's air traffic controllers that could affect passengers across 28 countries has been planned for Wednesday, January 29. Whether the industrial action will actually go ahead remains to be seen, as German controllers yesterday withdrew their strike call following an injunction from Lufthansa.

The pan-European strike has been called by the Air Traffic Controllers European Unions Coordination (ATCEUC), which represents 14 000 flight controllers in 28 European countries. The ATCEUC is protesting against the EU’s plans to liberalise and deregulate European airspace, which the ATCEUC says could endanger the safe provision of services.

ATCEUC had originally planned to strike in autumn last year but agreed to negotiations in a bid to resolve the issues without industrial action. Negotiations seem to have failed, however, and ATCEUC said in a statement: “Although ATCEUC has repeatedly shown its commitment to a real discussion, the EC has continuously disregarded our opinion. This forces ATCEUC, once again, to stand firm by resuming ATCEUC Action Day! On January 29, ATCOs around Europe will demonstrate their disappointment regarding EC’s method.”

According to strike.skynetblogs.be, the following strikes can be expected:

Italy

Jan 29: Union has called a strike from 1200-1600 UTC.

Jan 30: Union has called a strike from 1400-1415 UTC.

France

Cancellation of French strike between January 27 and 31, but participating in the action on January 30. Times of action to be defined.

Portugal

Portuguese ATCO Union has called for a strike on January 29 between 0700 and 0900, and 1400 and 1600 UTC.

On January 30, AIS/COM and maintenance staff may participate in an industrial action. Some disruption on those services may occur between 1300 and 1500 UTC.

Slovakia

ATCO Union has announced participation in the strike on January 30 for two hours between 0800 and 1000 UTC.

Czech Republic

ATCO Union has announced support for the strike on January 30 between 0600 and 1800 UTC with work-to-rule actions.

Hungary

Based on the preliminary discussion with ATCO Union, support for the action has been announced on January 30 for two hours between 0800 and 1000 UTC.

Austria

ATCO Union has announced participation in the action day on January 30 for two hours between 0800 and 1000 UTC.

Cyprus

ATCO Union has announced support for the strike on January 29 for four hours, between 1300 and 1700 UTC with work-to-rule actions.

Malta

Malta Air Traffic Controllers Association has announced support for the strike on January 29 between 0500 and 1700 UTC with work-to-rule actions.

As the strike action is subject to change and cancellation, passengers are advised to always check with the airlines.

Turkey Visa's - don't panic

SA passport holders will still be able to obtain a visa-on-arrival for the foreseeable future, when travelling to Turkey.

Communication circulating in the industry, warning travel agents that visitors to Turkey would soon have to apply for a visa online or they may be refused entry to the country, is incorrect.

eTNW confirmed with the Turkish embassy in Pretoria and other authorities that the rules have only changed for UK travellers, who will no longer be able to obtain a visa-on-arrival when travelling to Turkey from April. They must instead apply for an electronic visa (e-visa) online.

South African travellers have a choice – they can obtain an e-visa or a visa-on-arrival at the airport. The e-visa will cost the same as before and will be emailed to travellers for them to print out at home after providing their name, date and place of birth, email address and passport details. They will then be required to present the document to immigration on arrival.

To apply for an e-visa, travellers should log on to www.evisa.gov.tr, provide the requested information, and – after the application is approved – make online payment and download their e-visa. The whole process should take no longer than 10 minutes.

An e-visa is valid only for tourism or trade purposes. For other purposes, such as work or study, an application through the embassy or consulate must be submitted.

Freezing weather and storms in the US have affected flights ahead of Thanksgiving.

According to Reuters, forecasters have warned that the winter storm could cause flight delays and icy roads for millions of people travelling for the holiday, depending on the path it takes as it heads eastward.

Thanksgiving falls on November 28.

The US National Weather Service in Fort Worth Texas has issued a winter weather advisory after hundreds of flights were cancelled in and out of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on November 24. The advisory says, following the storm, travel will be affected minimally for the rest of the week.

At Oklahoma City’s Will Roger World Airport, flights were also cancelled on November 24. The airport has said on Twitter that flights were operating presently but as snowy conditions continue, delays were possible.

Dallas Love Field Airport has tweeted that light rain and sleet could cause flight delays.

The National Weather Service has issued weather advisories for the next few days for Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arkansas.

All travellers in the region are urged to check their flight status, especially as the storm moves up the East Coast.

A UK travel alert has warned that from November 20, Britain will face Arctic conditions as temperatures are set to drop.

The travel alert, issued by Aero 24, says: “The big freeze will also bring the first widespread snowfall of winter with up to six inches expected over high ground. Freezing winds will lead to blizzard conditions in some parts while motorists across the country have been warned to take extra care as ice turns roads into skating rinks.”

The UK Met Office has also issued severe weather warnings for ice across much of northern, western and central areas of Britain.

“Roads are going to be treacherous as wet surfaces freeze overnight. Motorists should take extra care. Strong northerly winds in the north could trigger blizzard conditions. This extreme cold weather is likely to hold out for at least a couple of weeks and potentially into the middle of next month as cold air remains wedged over the UK,” MeteoGroup says

Winter 2013 into 2014 is forecast to be severe with above-average snowfall and plunging temperatures. Long-range weather forecasts warn of bitter Arctic gales leading to feet-deep snow drifts right up until February. Snow forecasts for winter 2013 suggest much of the country will be hit by heavy wintry downpours with no let up well into next year.

Forecasters have also warned that winter could bring chaos similar to the big freeze of 2010/11 which saw airports close and roads grind to a standstill.
