Ever seen an ostrich by the beach?

Cape Point is one of the few places where you can! Normally found in savannahs and deserts, these wild ostriches roaming the rocky coastline are far from their usual habitat.

Did you know you can tell the s*x of a giraffe by the “horns” on its head?

These are not actually horns, but ossicones. Unlike true horns or antlers, ossicones are made of cartilage that hardens into bone and is covered with skin.

How to tell the difference:
• Females and young giraffes have thinner ossicones with a tuft of hair on top.
• Adult males usually have thicker, bald ossicones from years of sparring.

Look at the giraffes above and see if you can tell which are calves, bulls (males) and cows (females).

Meet the ostrich, the world’s largest and fastest bird, native to South Africa’s open plains.

These incredible birds can run up to 70 km/h (43 mph) and use their powerful legs to defend themselves. Ostriches are fascinating creatures with big eyes, long necks, and feathers that look soft but are surprisingly strong.

You’ll often spot them on safaris and farms around the Cape Winelands and Karoo.

The whales have arrived in Hermanus!

Whale watching season is officially open. While Bryde’s whales can be seen all year round, August to October offers the best chance to spot Southern Right and Humpback whales along the South African coast.

Humpbacks are most active from May to December and are often seen breaching offshore or from scenic cliff viewpoints.

For a front-row seat, head to Walker Bay in Hermanus, one of the world’s top land-based whale watching destinations where Southern Right whales migrate to breed and calve.

Hermanus isn’t the only place to witness these gentle giants. The Garden Route and West Coast also offer excellent whale watching opportunities.

South Africa’s whale season is here, and it’s nothing short of spectacular.
