Did you know you can often tell what a bird eats just by looking at its beak? 🦅🪶

Every beak is perfectly designed for a specific purpose, from tearing flesh, to catching fish, drilling into wood, or sipping nectar from flowers. Nature truly equips every species for survival in its own unique way.

At Garden Route Birds of Prey Rehab Centre, we work closely with many incredible South African bird species, and one of the most fascinating things to observe is how each bird’s beak reflects its role in the wild.

This 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐲 (16 June 2026), young environmental ambassadors will come together to celebrate, learn about, and connect with our ocean heritage 🌊💙

The “𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐎𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞” 𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥, led by UbuMama Outdoor Education in partnership with SANParks, will bring together children, families, conservationists, educators, and creatives for a day filled with environmental education, storytelling, art, theatre, and inspiring conversations around protecting our natural world.

The event aims to support children from surrounding communities in attending and participating in hands-on activities that encourage positive environmental action and stewardship for the future.

We are also proud that two NVT staff members will be presenting on the day alongside a range of passionate conservation speakers and facilitators from across the Garden Route.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND AN INJURED BIRD OF PREY:

Every year, countless owls, eagles, hawks, falcons, and vultures are injured due to vehicle collisions, electrocution, poisoning, habitat destruction, and human interference. The actions taken in the first few moments after finding an injured raptor can determine whether that bird survives.

If you find an injured bird of prey:

• Do not panic or crowd the bird
Stress alone can worsen shock and injuries.

• Keep a safe distance and approach carefully
Even severely injured raptors can defend themselves with powerful talons and beaks.

• Use a towel, blanket, or jacket to gently cover the bird
Darkness helps reduce stress and keeps the bird calmer during rescue.

• Place the bird in a secure ventilated box
A closed cardboard box lined with a towel is often safest for transport. Avoid cages, as birds can damage their feathers further.

• Do not attempt to feed or give water
Improper feeding or handling can cause serious complications and may reduce the bird’s chance of survival.

• Keep the bird quiet and warm
Minimise noise, handling, and unnecessary movement.

• Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator immediately
Birds of prey require specialised care, veterinary treatment, and rehabilitation permits.

Please remember:
Keeping a wild bird of prey without the proper permits is illegal, and attempting home treatment often causes more harm than good. Rapid professional intervention gives these birds the best possible chance at recovery and release back into the wild.
