N3 Gateway Tourism Association

N3 Gateway Tourism Association Tourism route from Gauteng through North Eastern Free State, the Battlefields & Midlands & the Drakensberg to the KwaZulu-Natal coastline.

The N3 Gateway is a collective marketing organisation and tourism route that takes you on a journey of discovery from the bustling lights of the Gauteng skyline, through the grasslands of the North Eastern Free State, to the historical Battlefields in the east and rolling hills of the Midlands, over the tips of the mighty Drakensberg all the way to the fresh breeze off the KwaZulu-Natal coastline.

Through a healthy balance of activities, experiences, history, culture, conferencing venues and accommodation, the N3 Gateway provides the opportunity to develop a range of packages. World-class road networks, including the N3, make it accessible and safe for FIT’s and self-drive tourists, both local and foreign.

Please take care and respect each other and farmers' property if you go in search of snow.

WARNING! Conditions today in some regions are very hazardous today with icy roads, heavy snow and extreme cold. The South African Weather Service have warned of danger to life and property due to hypothermia and the collapsing of infrastructure, widespread loss of livestock and crops and closure of major routes.

If you are heading in the direction of these conditions, be sure to dress very warmly (see our new excellent gear supplier on our website) and make sure you have warm and waterproof footwear. Dress in layers and make sure you take dry clothes and especially extra socks with you. A warm hat or beanie is essential, as are gloves.

Driving in snow, even if it's very light, is very challenging and it is easy to lose control of the vehicle so slow down and keep a significant distance behind other cars.

Be sure to take warm blankets or sleeping bags and lots of food and water in the vehicle with you in case you get stuck.

If you do encounter snow along the way, please respect private property and especially farm fences. Farming is challenging enough without having to deal with damage from people chasing snow.

Please be sure to send photos and videos to us via whatsapp to 081 251 8029. Note that we are unable to take calls or respond to messages asking where to find snow (watch our page and website for details).

Creighton is a village 35 km northwest of Ixopo, probably currently most famous for it's steam train! Travelling onboard a machine from a bygone era such as the Eshayamoya is quite an experience in itself, but doing so through an unspoilt part of the African countryside is even more special – especially countryside as beautiful as that found between Creighton station and the nearby village of Riverside.

The N3 Gateway Tourism Association was born out of the desire to encourage South Africans to explore the 'road less travelled' along the N3 highway which links Johannesburg to Durban... to take it slow and to enjoy all that this incredibly beautiful region has to offer. Here we highlight little dorpies and towns that make up the N3 Gateway route.

The main reason for being in Bulwer is not to visit the town. A village like Bulwer serves little other purpose than to refuel, both your car and possibly your food supplies, before entering the wilderness and beauty that is the Drakensberg.

Bulwer Mountain, also known as Amahaqwa Mountain (misty one), is the major backdrop to the town of Bulwer, famous for its paragliding and hang gliding potential and fun flying mainly due to its easy toplanding; most people then land in a field just behind the garage on the south side of town.

The mountain forms part of the foothills of the Drakensberg and the area around here is particularly beautiful - lush, rolling hills, forests, lakes, dams and almost immediate access to a peace and quiet claimed in very few parts of the world. Around Bulwer you'll find beautiful farms set in restored farmhouses, rustic cottages, lodges, campsites and quaint country hotels that serve as peaceful retreats and havens away from it all. Bird life here is prolific and sightings of the endangered Cape parrot, surprisingly, are not unusual. [SA Venues]
