You’ve already met Sylvia, but on 24 September, another very special star will be joining her on the tracks.

Meet PATRICIA — Class 6A No. 473. 🚂

Built in 1897, Patricia is an incredible 129 years old and is recognised as the oldest working steam locomotive in South Africa.

This Heritage Day, Patricia will join Sylvia for our historic double-header journey between Hartenbos and Santos, Mossel Bay — bringing together two magnificent working steam locomotives with a combined 225 years of railway history. 🇿🇦

But before the big day, we thought you deserved a closer look…

🚂🚂 DO YOU KNOW WHAT A DOUBLE-HEADER IS?

A double-header is something rather special in the railway world.

It means two locomotives coupled together at the front of the same train, working together to pull it along the tracks.

In the days of steam, double-heading provided extra power when trains were particularly heavy or when routes demanded more from a single locomotive.

And this Heritage Day, 24 September, we're bringing this piece of railway history back to the tracks between Hartenbos and Santos, Mossel Bay. 🇿🇦

But what makes our double-header particularly special?

🚂 PATRICIA — Class 6A No. 473
Built in 1897 and recognised as South Africa's oldest working steam locomotive — an incredible 129 years old.

🚂 SYLVIA — Class 19B No. 1412
Built in 1930 and still proudly steaming at 96 years old.

Together, these two magnificent locomotives represent 225 years of combined railway history.

And they won't be standing side by side in a museum.

They'll be coupled together at the head of our vintage train, doing what they were built to do. 🚂🚂

That's what makes this Heritage Day journey so special.

It's an opportunity to see, photograph and travel behind a genuine steam double-header along the beautiful Mossel Bay coastline — bringing railway history to life for another generation.

You’ve already met SYLVIA. Now, for Heritage Day, she’ll be joined by someone very special.

Meet PATRICIA — Class 6A No. 473, built in 1897 and recognised as the oldest working steam locomotive in South Africa.

At an incredible 129 years old, Patricia represents more than a century of South African railway history — and on 24 September 2026, she won’t simply be on display.

She’ll be taking to the tracks.

For this special Heritage Day journey, Patricia will join 96-year-old Sylvia at the head of our vintage train for a spectacular double-header between Hartenbos and Santos, Mossel Bay. 🚂🚂

Together, Patricia and Sylvia represent an incredible 225 years of combined railway history.

🚂🇿🇦 WHAT MAKES THIS HERITAGE DAY JOURNEY SO SPECIAL?

It’s not every day that you get to climb aboard a train pulled by a 96-year-old steam locomotive.

On 24 September, SAR Class 19B No. 1412 “SYLVIA”, built in 1930, will take passengers on a Heritage Day journey between Hartenbos and Santos, Mossel Bay.

But Sylvia is only part of what makes this experience so special.

🚂 A working piece of history
At 96 years old, Sylvia is still doing what she was built to do — taking to the rails under steam.

🚋 Coaches with more than a century of history
You won’t simply be looking at railway heritage. You’ll be sitting inside beautifully restored vintage coaches that are themselves more than 100 years old.

🌊 A spectacular coastal railway journey
The route between Hartenbos and Santos takes you alongside the Mossel Bay coastline, offering a completely different way to experience this familiar stretch of the Garden Route.

❤️ An experience shared across generations
For some, it brings back memories of travelling by train years ago. For children and grandchildren, it could be their very first experience aboard a real steam train.

This isn't a museum display behind glass. It’s our railway heritage still moving, still working and still creating memories.

🚂 STEAM TRAINS IN THE GARDEN ROUTE — A LOOK BACK

A glimpse back at a time when steam trains were a familiar sight on the railway lines of the Garden Route.

Steam trains played an important role in the development of towns and communities across the region. Long before travelling by road became what it is today, the railway helped connect communities, transport passengers and move goods and agricultural produce between towns and further afield.

The railway was more than a way to travel — it formed part of everyday life and helped connect the Garden Route with the rest of South Africa.

These old scenes are a wonderful reminder of that rich railway heritage.

And this Heritage Day, steam returns to the Mossel Bay coastline. 🇿🇦🚂

On 24 September, climb aboard SAR Class 19B No. 1412 “SYLVIA”, built in 1930, for a special journey between Hartenbos and Santos, Mossel Bay.

Ons gee jongmense die geleentheid om meer te leer oor stoomlokomotiewe, hoe hierdie indrukwekkende masjiene werk en die geskiedenis agter Suid-Afrika se spoorweë.

Deur praktiese ervaring en die deel van kennis help ons om ’n liefde en waardering vir hierdie besondere deel van ons erfenis lewendig te hou. 🚂🇿🇦

Want ons spoorweggeskiedenis behoort nie net aan die verlede nie. Dit is iets wat ons aan die volgende generasie kan oordra.

🚂🇿🇦 DIE NOSTALGIESE FLUIT VAN ’N STOOMTREIN KEER TERUG NA MOSSELBAAI!

Op 24 September sal die nostalgiese fluit van ’n stoomtrein weer deur Mosselbaai gehoor word wanneer SYLVIA, Atlantic Rail se 96 jaar oue stoomlokomotief, weer die spoor tussen Hartenbos en Santos, Mosselbaai aandurf.

Vir sommige bring dit herinneringe terug aan ’n tyd toe stoomtreine deel van die alledaagse lewe was. Vir ander is dit ’n kans om hierdie besondere deel van ons spoorwegerfenis vir die eerste keer te beleef.

Hierdie Erfenisdag bring ons die verlede weer tot lewe. Bring die kinders, kleinkinders, familie en vriende en kom beleef ’n stukkie Suid-Afrikaanse geskiedenis op die spoor. ❤️🚂
