Lions are not very dependent on water as they receive a lot of their fluids from the blood of their prey. When they do come out to drink, it is always super cool to watch, especially if you can capture the reflection on the water!

Yesterday afternoon, we turned the corner just before sunset and there they were: three young Serval kittens playing on the road. What a luck! They went into the grass and began hunting, giving us the opportunity to delve into their secret lives for just a few minutes ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿงก๐ŸคŽ

Leopard tortoises mating ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿข๐Ÿ’š

They are known to be noisy whilst copulating but these two had my gardener at the lodge and me cracking up ๐Ÿ˜†

Leopard tortoises are the fourth largest tortoise species in the World and can easily live to be over 100 years old, though some research suggests that they can become even older.

For all my fellow birders, here a selection of shots taken over the winter months of some of our permanent residents. The summer visitors are starting to arrive and weโ€™ve spotted Yellow-billed Kites and Wahlbergโ€™s Eagle out on drive already.

โš ๏ธ This content shows natural predator/prey behaviour - no graphic gore but the footage shows a live kill โš ๏ธ

Two lionesses cleverly ambushed a warthog on the reserve Main Road during the afternoon rush hour. The one lay waiting patiently under a bush, while the other chased the unfortunate pig across the road right into the trap. This was a perfectly executed kill by two very experienced lionesses. They had been hunting during the heat of the day to provide for their cubs. Though it is always thrilling to witness these types of interactions, my thoughts were also with the orphaned piglets that the warthog mother left behind. The harsh reality of nature is that in order for one to live, the other must die.

Sundownersโ€ฆ The perfect way to end the day in the African Bush ๐ŸŒ…๐Ÿ’›

When the heat of the day subsides and that nice cool breeze brings relief. The diurnal animals start settling down for the night and the nocturnal ones report for their shift. An excellent opportunity to reflect on the sightings of the day and to say thank you for the privilege of being hereโ€ฆ

What would be your ideal Sundowner setting?

Fight Club ๐Ÿฆ“๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿฆ“

The windy weather always makes the Zebra frisky. Two young stallions fighting over their rank in the hierarchy. Only the strongest are able to make to alpha male in the breeding herds. Some stay in the bachelor herds all their lives. They can inflict serious damage on their opponents, sometimes even amputating the other oneโ€™s tail.

It is always spectacular to watch an African Harrier Hawk hunting! Due to being double-jointed, they are able to hang upside down and raid holes and crevices in trees with their long legs and talons. Their favourite prey are nestling birds but they will also eat rodents, lizards, frogs and insects.

Spring is in the Air ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒท๐ŸŒผ

The Knobthorns are in full bloom all over southern Kruger, the Jackalberries are golden in the sun, the Sausage Trees are displaying their beautiful red flowers, the Tree Wisterias are showing off their pretty lavender bells, the Euphorbias are fruiting, the Weavers are chattering loudly as they build their intricate nests and the songbirds are singing more vigorously every day in search of a suitable mate for the breeding season.

It is absolutely breathtaking to watch the African bush transform at this time of year!
