A very memorable hunt! Darry Guppy shot this awesome Nyala bull and it died in the Umkomaas river. The river was in flood at the time and the Nyala was being washed downstream so we had to dive in and pull it out. What an amazing trophy and an amazing hunt!

Bushveld Violet - aptosimum lineare
this low growing perennial herb or subshrub usually forms compact, prostrate cushions near to to ground. they can be in full flower in the driest of conditions and are therefore spectacular during the winter months.
very little horticultural research has been done on this species, yet traditionally it was used to treat "krimpsiekte" in sheep, an acute sickness that affects the joints, muscles and stomach, often resulting in starvation and ultimately death.

Num-num - carissa bispinosa
this is an evergreen, dense, twiggy bush with handsome glossy foliage and fragrant, starry-white, jasmine-like flowers. the whole fruit, including the seed is edible and has a delicious flavour.
traditionally the fruits were eaten, the roots used to treat toothache and the plant was used in an annual Swazi ceremony to increase the courage and ferocity of a black bull which would be killed by warriors using only their bare hands!

Impala Lily - adenium multiflorum
it flowers in winter when most of the surrounding vegetation is rather dull in comparison to its brilliant white, pink, crimson & red multicoloured flowers.
the impala lily is known in africa as a source of fish poison and arrow poison. the poison is prepared from the latex in the bark and fleshy parts of the trunk. despite its toxicity, it is also used in medicinal applications and traditional magic potions!
