There’s a particular kind of morning here in winter. 🌞

The air is sharp and cold at first light — the kind that makes you wrap both hands around your coffee. And then the sun climbs over the bush, and slowly, everything starts to soften.

The warthogs understand this better than anyone.
On a recent early-morning drive through the estate, we found a few of them stretched out beside the road, soaking up that first golden warmth — utterly unbothered, in no hurry to be anywhere. Winter mornings are made for exactly this.

Warthogs may not be the most glamorous animals in the bush, but they have a charm all of their own — trotting off with tails straight up like little aerials, kneeling on their front “elbows” to graze, and clearly very fond of a good sunbathe.

It’s the small, everyday sightings like this that make life on the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate so special. No rush. Just the bush waking up, one warm patch of sunlight at a time. 🌿

Some sightings stay with you. 🐆

Early one evening, as the light was fading, a male leopard moved quietly through the estate. Unhurried, completely at ease, he took no notice of us at all — simply going about his evening on his own terms.

Living on the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate means sharing space with animals like this, and it’s a privilege we never take for granted. Leopards are solitary, secretive and naturally wary of people. As a rule, they want nothing to do with us and will go out of their way to avoid contact — which is why the estate remains a wonderful place to walk, run and cycle during the day.

After dark, though, the bush belongs to its animals. Many predators, leopards included, are most active at night, when they hunt and move under cover of darkness. That’s exactly why we filmed this sighting from the safety of our vehicle, and why we always stay in our cars after sunset rather than walking. It’s not about fear — it’s about respect, and giving these animals the space and quiet they need to go about their evening undisturbed.

We stay mindful, of course. We keep our distance, never approach or follow, and remember that we are guests in their world as much as they are part of ours. That quiet awareness is part of what makes life out here feel so alive.

There’s something deeply humbling about watching a leopard simply exist — powerful, graceful, and entirely indifferent to us. A reminder of how wild this place still is, and how lucky we are to call it home. 🌿

You've probably noticed it from the patio — that tall peak rising up in the distance, sometimes glowing pink at sunset, sometimes wrapped in cloud, sometimes simply sitting there like a quiet, ancient neighbour 🏔️

That's Mariepskop. And there's far more to it than meets the eye.

This single mountain is the source of water for almost the entire Lowveld. Classified as a National Strategic Water Source Area, it feeds the Blyde Dam, the rivers of Kruger National Park, and the household water supply of towns like Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa. Iconic rivers like the Blyde, Sabie, Sand and Klaserie all begin up there.

🌳 It's also one of the most biodiverse mountains in the country — home to over 2,000 plant species, more than the entire Kruger National Park, and rivalling even Table Mountain's famed plant diversity.

From savanna at its base, through indigenous Afromontane forest on its slopes, to mistbelt grassland at the summit, the vegetation changes dramatically — with several species found nowhere else on Earth.

Sometimes the most extraordinary things in the bush are the ones we see every day — and never really stop to look at.

From the patio at UmnDeni Africa Bush Villas, that mountain on the horizon is one of them — quietly feeding our rivers and sheltering plant life found nowhere else. 🌿

🦉 We came across this Verreaux's Eagle Owl perched at the top of a bare branch as the day was fading — silhouetted against the soft twilight sky.

Verreaux's Eagle Owls are one of Africa's largest owl species, with wingspans of up to 1.5 metres. Easily recognised by their soft, pale grey plumage and famous pink eyelids 💗, they spend most of the day quietly resting in large trees, only becoming active around dusk.

Look closely, and you'll spot a small Fork-tailed Drongo on a lower fork of the same branch. Drongos are bold little birds that keep a careful eye on larger predators — and aren't shy about letting them know they've been seen.

A quiet stand-off, just as the light was fading.

Sightings like this are some of the small privileges of staying on the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate — a reminder of just how alive the bush is, even when it looks completely still.

The first time this season we needed a fire 🔥

There's something about that first cool evening of the year — the kind that sneaks up on you in May, just after sunset.

You step outside in shorts, then quietly go back in for a jersey. Light a small fire. Pour something warming. Pull a chair a little closer to the flames.

The bush sounds different at night this time of year — sharper somehow, with the air carrying every rustle and call a little further.

At UmnDeni Africa Bush Villas, the outdoor space is built for moments like this. Private. Quiet. Yours.

A fire under an African sky is one of the simplest and best things about staying here in autumn.

Not every snake in the bush is one to be afraid of 🐍🌿

This is a Schlegel's Blind Snake — one of the largest blind snakes in southern Africa, and a completely harmless little creature that we recently spotted during a walk along the green belt.

A few things worth knowing:

🌱 They are entirely non-venomous and pose no threat to people or pets.
🐜 They feed almost exclusively on termites and ant larvae, which makes them quietly useful neighbours to have around.
👁️ Their tiny eyes are covered by scales — hence the name "blind snake." They rely on touch and chemical cues underground.
🪱 They spend most of their lives below the surface and are usually only seen after rain or while moving between burrows.

Snakes have such a difficult reputation, but the truth is that the vast majority want absolutely nothing to do with us. They're shy, calm, and far more interested in slipping quietly out of sight than anything else.

Sightings like this are one of the small privileges of life on the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate — a chance to see something usually hidden, and to appreciate just how much is happening beneath the bush we walk through every day.

A reminder that everything out here has its place. 🌿

🐾 A fleeting glimpse of something rare.

Late one afternoon, just as the light was starting to fade, a pack of African Wild Dogs moved through the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate. They had made a kill earlier on the green belt — a nyala bull — and were resting in a quiet, hidden spot in the dry riverbed, mostly out of view.

We only caught a brief glimpse of two of them on the move, bellies clearly full, before they disappeared into the bush again.

And honestly, that's wild dogs for you.

African Wild Dogs (also called Painted Wolves) are one of Africa's most endangered carnivores, with only around 6,000 left in the wild. They roam across enormous territories — sometimes hundreds of square kilometres — and fences don't easily stop them.

They come and go, following their own rhythm, their own routes, completely on their own terms.
Which is what makes a sighting like this so special. They weren't expected. They simply arrived, did what wild dogs do, and moved on again.

Even a glimpse is a privilege.

A reminder that the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate is part of a much bigger, wilder system — and what a rare gift it is to share space with species this endangered.

The bush is full of mothers right now 🌿

If you've spent any time on the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate, you'll have seen them — nyala does moving quietly with their young in nursery groups, warthog piglets trotting in single file behind mom, zebra mares standing guard while their foals graze closely, and giraffe calves staying close to those long, watchful legs.

Each species has its own way. Warthog mothers raise their piglets together in tight family groups, with sisters and aunts helping look after the young. Leopard mothers do it almost entirely alone. Impala synchronise their births so the babies move together as a group, safer in numbers.

Different strategies, the same instinct: protect, teach, care.

This Mother's Day, we're thinking about all the moms who do the same — quietly, fiercely, and often without recognition.

We hope you have a wonderful day today 💛
