The soft rustle of leaves shattered the silence of the early morning as Ezulweni stepped into the open. We remained frozen in in our sleeping spots.

Ezulweni... Sir.... was in the open, 10m away, ears out, head up, looking down at us for what felt like an eternity. Unsure of what lay before him, he made sure to give us a good once over before bolding steeping forward for further investigations.

Being in such close proximity of such a magnificent animal is a profoundly humbling experience, one that is able to put many things into perspective. And when he makes eye contact it becomes very clear that you are in fact in his world and should do your best to respect that.

The moment dragged one until he was satisfied with what he saw. Then, just as quietly as he appeared, he disappeared off down by the river.

However, his curiosity had not yet been satisfied and he reappeared approximately 20 minutes later for another close inspection. Again time stood still, as he watched us for a minute or so, before turning and silently moving away.
