Baby Support - from belly to breast

Baby Support - from belly to breast Providing support to parents during pregnancy, birth and the early stages of parenthood. As a doula I offer labour and birth support.

I offer workshops for the pregnant couple to provide them with information on what to expect in the early days with regard to breastfeeding, baby and even how they as parents change as people. As a lactation consultant I assist couples at the hospital or home with breastfeeding related challenges and queries. My aim is happier babies, happier parents. And to get baby breastfeeding longer and for mom to enjoy the experience.

THIS ❤️

I've been rocking and cuddling my baby to sleep since that day he was born. I mentioned this to a nurse at my clinic recently. She said that she did the same thing with her son, and everyone warned her that she would still have a teenager sleeping in her bed.

And then she told me that, a few weeks ago, her teenage son came home from school very upset. He didn't want to talk, and just went to his room and listened to his music, typed on his phone and cried.

The mother gave her son space, and night time came and she went to bed. Just as she was about to turn off her side light, the door opened, and her 15 year old padded into the room.

He climbed into the bed with her, laid his head on her shoulder and cried. He told her all about the girl that broke his heart, all about the friends who laughed, all about the stresses of being him. She told him about her first broken heart, about friends who'd been cruel, and told him she understands. They talked in the dark for hours, until he feel asleep in her bed. Still sad but relieved after their talk.

'So you see' she said to me, when she finished the story. 'I was so scared that I wound wind up with a teenager who would 'need me' at night, that I never stopped to consider how beautiful that would really be.' .

Co sleeping can give many a better nights sleep. I will never forget one family i worked with though who desperately wanted to co sleep and had baby in their bed walking every 20 minutes or so. The moment they moved babe to another room the little one almost slept through the night. Turns out dads snoring was walking her🤣🤣
At the end of the day though co sleeping is a solution that works for many families.

Our first three babies were easy sleepers. Then, along came our fourth child, Hayden. Hayden hated her crib. Finally one night, out of sheer exhaustion my wife, Martha, brought Hayden into our bed. From that night on we all slept better. We slept so happily together that we did it for four years, until the next baby was born!

Cup feeding is a great short term alternative for babes who can’t or won’t latch. It helps prevent Nike confusion that some babies get from drinking with a bottle.

Infant dyschezia

The Most Dangerous (Sounding) Condition in Babies that You've Never Heard Of

I feel like I've seen an outbreak of a condition in my clinic and in social media the past couple months...but should you be worried about your baby having infant dyschezia?

The main question that families with infant dyschezia ask about is fussiness that is seemingly associated with gas. Parents have often tried multiple remedies such as: bicycling the childs legs, offerring medication (homeopathic or otherwise), changing formula, changing mom's diet, even sticking something in their child's bottom with no relief...often leading to stressful fussy evenings or long exhausting nights.

But, what is infant dyschezia?

Infant dyschezia describes the 5-10 minute period of fussing a baby can do, with straining, I mean red-contorted face straining prior to passing gas or stool. It happens because their efforts to pass stool are uncoordinated. They are pushing with every muscle in their body in all the wrong directions until one second they accidentally push correctly and gas or even soft, liquid stool comes out. Then they get relief.

The problem is that their seeming fussiness is not because they are in pain, it's because they're trying to figure out how to push the gas out. Unfortunately studies don't show effectiveness of any of the techniques I listed above, it's something that babies for the most part just have to figure out. Imagine if I changed your method of passing gas tomorrow morning to where it had to come from you shoulder to your wrist...it would probably take some time figure out.

The thing is that babies are gassy all of the time...even happy babies can toot like grown men.

And guess what? Most parents quit asking about fussiness with gas sometime around or just after their 1 month check up about the times babies master this farting and pooping thing.

So if you want to offer some low risk treatment options, be my guest. But, there's no reason to go crazy, to cut all mom's favorite foods out of her diet or to try a new formula every week. Just wait a bit, things will get better, I promise.

Brilliant infographic.

Showing the transition from womb to world, and why baby loves being carried and sleeping on you.

Also why baby may wake up as soon as baby falls asleep and is put down.

The fourth trimester is a huge time for the brain development.

Why delaying the first bath is so important

Delaying a baby's first bath by at least 12 hours drove up in-hospital exclusive breastfeeding rates in a study at Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital. The hospital has adopted the new policy, and is spreading it to other facilities in the system.
