The Flying Dutchman Funicular at Cape Point is temporarily closed for maintenance, but visitors can still reach the lighthouse via a shuttle service or by walking. While the shuttle helps those who may struggle with the climb, it is not wheelchair accessible.

This iconic attraction—Africa’s first commercial funicular—normally carries visitors up to panoramic viewpoints overlooking the coastline within Table Mountain National Park. Despite the closure, Cape Point remains open, and visitors are advised to allow extra time to access the views and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty.

Travel agents and safari travellers heading to Kruger National Park should be aware of several important travel updates this week as the park continues recovering from the severe January 2026 floods.

As reported by TravelNews, a temporary road closure is currently affecting the H1-2 tar road between the Skukuza Airport turnoff and the H1-2/H12 junction due to rising water levels in the Sand River. According to South African National Parks, this precautionary closure has been implemented to ensure visitor safety after recent rainfall increased river flow. Travellers are advised to use the H4-1 bypass route, which still allows access to popular camps such as Lower Sabie Rest Camp and Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp.

For those travelling north from Skukuza Rest Camp, the recommended detour is via the H4-1, reconnecting at the H12 bridge. Visitors should allow extra travel time, as road conditions can change quickly after rainfall.

There is also encouraging progress in the park’s northern region. Shingwedzi Rest Camp reopened on Friday 6 March 2026, an important milestone in the park’s flood recovery. However, access is currently limited to Punda Maria Gate or Pafuri Gate because the Letaba high-water bridge remains under repair.

Meanwhile, Talamati Bush Camp is still inaccessible following heavy rains earlier this week, with guests being redirected to alternative camps.

Visitors are advised to respect road closures, avoid low-water crossings after rain, and check official updates before travelling. While recovery continues, Kruger remains open and wildlife viewing is still spectacular.
