There’s more to this view than meets the eye.

From the ground, Lake Heritage is a quiet stretch of water in the Cradle of Humankind.

From above, you see something rather different.

The wall holding it back is the largest hand-built stone dam wall on the African continent - built in 2006 from stone found right here on the property. Cradle Moon Game Lodge SA

And from a hot air balloon, the whole picture comes together - the lake, the dam, the Crocodile River and the landscape beyond.

One of those places you might drive past without ever really seeing.

Until you’re above it.

There are moments when the pilot says nothing.

Not because there's nothing to see, but because everyone in the basket is watching what's happening.

This morning, it was the rhino moving through the reserve below.

The balloon drifts on, carried by the morning wind, while the landscape slowly wakes up around you.

No road. Just the occasional sound of the burner, followed by the quiet of the flight.

Before the first balloon leaves the ground, the launch field is already busy.

One by one, the balloons are laid out, the burners come to life, and the envelopes slowly start to take shape.

With several balloons inflating at once, there’s plenty happening on the field before anyone is even airborne.

It’s one of those parts of the experience you don’t really appreciate until you’ve stood there and watched it happen.

Then, one by one, they leave the field.

No production crew. No staged shots. Just a passenger, a camera, and a morning spent flying over the Cradle of Humankind.

Through the Swartskop Gorge.

These are views you simply can’t appreciate from the ground.

Cliffs rise on either side as the balloon drifts through the gorge, with the wider landscape of the Cradle of Humankind opening up beyond.

One moment, you’re moving between the cliffs; the next, you’re climbing above them, revealing a completely different perspective.

We’ll miss this part of winter.

Those cold, clear mornings. The dry winter landscape. The light that seems to stretch forever across the Cradle.

But you can feel the change coming.

The mornings are getting lighter, the first hints of green are starting to appear and spring isn’t far away.

A different season to fly through. And we’ll be up there to watch it change.
