Dopamine décor brings a vibrant and uplifting energy to interiors, transforming homes into joyful sanctuaries to boost mood and self-expression. This trend is all about embracing colour, nostalgia and personal touches to create a space that truly makes you happy. Here’s how you can get started:

𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘁
Embrace colours, patterns and objects that make you smile. If a neon pink chair or a quirky wallpaper sparks joy, go for it. Forget about 'design rules' - decorate in a way that shows off your personality.

𝗔𝗱𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀
It’s the little things that make a home feel special. Whether it’s a piece of art from a favourite holiday, a hand-me-down blanket or a childhood trinket, these elements create ‘happiness hotspots’ throughout your home.

𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲
If bold colours aren’t your thing, let texture do the work. Layering velvet, boucle, linen and wood can bring depth and warmth to a space, making it feel cosy and inviting. Choose materials that evoke happy memories or a sense of relaxation.

𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘀
Scented candles, soft lighting, and uplifting music can all enhance the mood of a space. Try incorporating fresh flowers and creating playlists to match different areas of your home.

𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲
Dopamine décor isn’t about following a prescribed look—it’s about enhancing what already makes you happy. Consider using a consistent colour palette or design aesthetic as a base, then layering joyful accents to amplify the mood.

𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝘂𝗽
Lighting plays a crucial role in creating an atmosphere. Playful pendant lights, statement lamps or candles add warmth and character to your space. The right lighting can spark joy; no matter the design choice.

March is a wonderful month in the garden, and as the days grow shorter, gardeners inevitably start thinking of their winter and spring gardens.

Gardening in the cooler weather is a pleasure. If you take care of tidying, planting and sowing now, your seedlings will have a chance to establish themselves before the cold weather sets in, ensuring a beautiful winter show.

Gardening in South Africa suggests the following tasks for your garden this month.

𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
In cold regions, start cutting back on water for established shrubs and trees, watering thoroughly but less often. Overwatering - and overfeeding – now will cause your plants to produce lots of soft new growth, which the first severe frost will kill off. Harden the wood of plants slowly now to withstand the coming dry season and low temperatures.

𝗪𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
The end of summer can be a dry time, so it’s important to continue with responsible water-wise gardening practices. Plant shrubs and trees so that they will be well established by summer. Re-pot outdoor container plants so that they can settle down and make roots while the weather is still warm. Start some light pruning and tidying up.

𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
This is the best season to garden in these regions, so enjoy the cooler weather and prepare for a glorious winter and spring flower, vegetable and herb garden. Many summer flowering plants and vegetables grow better during the winter season in these regions, so prepare beds for planting now. Feed your lawn every six weeks and mulch garden beds to help retain moisture and keep the soil cool.

𝗗𝗿𝘆, 𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗶-𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
Start reducing the amount of water you give established shrubs and trees; consider watering thoroughly but less often. Give the whole garden - including the lawn, citrus trees and roses - a last feed for this season with an organic 3:1:5 fertiliser and water it in well.

If you're ready to kick your home's styling up a notch, follow these (often unexpected!) rules from interior designers to DIY a pro makeover. (And one great thing: for most of these, you probably already have everything you need to make it happen!)

𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗕𝘂𝗹𝗯𝘀 𝗜𝘀 𝗮 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿
Don't use bright white bulbs inside your house. Ensure all the bulbs in a room are the same to make the room look balanced.

You don't want to be stingy with the extra cushions—but you also don't want to make it impossible for people to sit on your sofa comfortably. For most sofas, that's three square pillows and two lumbar pillows—no more than that—and two square, two lumbar pillows for a smaller sofa,

𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗢𝗱𝗱 𝗡𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀
Asymmetry is more visually interesting. Display collections in odd numbers such as three or five pieces.

𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲
Get creative with the things you love and find new places to enjoy them. A small vase can hold pens on your desk or makeup brushes on your vanity. Pretty storage boxes or baskets make a great home for remotes and other coffee table clutter.

𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗟𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁
It’s the best way to view art and feels more sophisticated than hanging too high and having the piece floating in space.

If you're looking for ways to transform your garden, here are some deck ideas to inspire your next project:

𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘆 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗼𝗼𝗸
Create a small decked area with composite decking boards and add comfortable outdoor furniture. This is a great way to maximise a small garden or porch while creating a relaxing space to unwind.

𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶-𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴
Incorporate decking steps and multiple levels to add dimension to your garden design. This works well for sloped outdoor spaces and can separate areas for lounging, dining or gardening.

𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁-𝗜𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀
Enhance your decking project with built-in planters filled with vibrant flowers or greenery. It's a simple way to bring life and colour to your outdoor decking area while blending seamlessly with the natural environment.

𝗖𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴
Install a pergola or awning over your deck to provide shade and protection from the elements. This turns it into a functional outdoor space that can be enjoyed year-round.

𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴
Add LED lights along decking steps, railings or the edges of the deck boards. Lighting not only enhances the safety of your deck but also creates a cosy and inviting atmosphere in the evenings.

These ideas are a great starting point for your decking project, helping you create an outdoor space that's both functional and visually stunning.

Layered lighting is where multiple light sources are combined within a single room to create a space that is both functional, comfortable and visually pleasing. Here are a few ideas to layer lighting in your bedroom.

As spaces designed for relaxation, bedrooms require lower levels of ambient light. However, the room does fulfil other functions, so it’s important to think about how you will use the room from the outset as this will determine what additional lights you need and where to put them. For example, you may want a reading light positioned next to the bed – this could be fitted into the wall or could consist of a hanging light from the ceiling, it could even be wired into a headboard.

Start by thinking about overhead bedroom lighting and then consider layering from there. Tall ceilings are great places to showcase a chandelier, alternatively try flush mount bedroom ceiling lights for lower ceilings. Where ceiling lights are not an option, sometimes strip lighting around the top of the room can be used – this is a great way to make ceilings appear taller.

If your bedroom contains a dressing area and a dressing table, this too will need lighting. Consider a mirror with integrated LED lighting which distributes a softer light as this will be more flattering.

If you have built-in wardrobes, in-wardrobe lighting will help you find what you are looking for whilst also adding to the general mood of the room

Looking to freshen up a room in your home? Picking the right paint colour can dramatically change the feel of any room. Here are a few tips before you paint to make your job easier.

𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲
Painting is much easier (and quicker) when there is nothing in your way. Empty the room as much as possible. Move large furniture pieces to the centre and cover them with old sheets or drop cloths.

𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗿
It’s difficult to determine how a particular colour will look on your walls and with your lighting. Buy a small paint sample first and do a test before committing. Find an obscure corner or surface to test how the colour will look inside your home.

𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲
Don’t be afraid to bring new colours into your home. Darker colours add texture and depth to the space. Brighter, lighter colours can really open up a space and make it feel much larger.

𝗣𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲
In most instances, an eggshell finish is the best option. It provides some gloss, is still easy to clean, does not highlight imperfections and is not as prone to damage as flat paint.

𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁
Primer seals the walls, providing a base for the paint to adhere to. After you fill in all the holes and cracks, primer becomes even more important. It prevents shiny spots on the wall that occur when paint is placed directly on plaster. Always try to prime before you paint. It guarantees a great finish and allows you to use less paint.
