Op-Ed | What if the biggest barrier facing South Africa’s SMEs is not the lack of funding, but the way the system measures opportunity?

In this op-ed, Dr. Gloria Kulaya Kiondo examines why many township and micro-enterprises remain excluded from formal finance despite the existence of multiple funding programmes.

The article unpacks the “SME visibility paradox”, where economically active businesses continue to fall outside conventional risk models, limiting their access to growth opportunities.

From digital infrastructure to alternative credit pathways, the piece explores what it will take to build systems that better recognise, support, and scale the businesses already powering local economies.

“Innovation and technology will awaken this sleeping giant called Africa.”

, Africa’s Wealth Paradox connects these everyday perspectives to the bigger conversation on wealth, systems and Africa’s future.

Township retail plays a critical role in South Africa’s economy, yet many businesses continue to face barriers when it comes to accessing finance and scaling their operations.

As momentum builds around more inclusive economic solutions, it is worth revisiting Township Spark and what it set out to do.

Township Spark is designed to unlock finance for township SMMEs by reducing lending risk and attracting private capital into underserved markets. By creating more accessible financing pathways, the initiative aims to support business growth, formalisation, and long-term sustainability, particularly for youth- and women-led enterprises.

As this work continues, Township Spark remains a key building block in shaping a more inclusive and investment-ready township economy.
