Tuesday, 27 May 2025, was a significant and demanding day for South Africa’s marine mammal response teams. The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) responded to two separate whale strandings , one involving a humpback whale in St Helena Bay, and another involving a s***m whale in Struisbaai.
The s***m whale had originally stranded on Friday, 23 May, and sadly died the following day. Efforts by the Bredasdorp Municipality and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) to relocate the carcass to a more secluded area for detailed sampling were unfortunately hampered by natural and logistical challenges.
On 27 May, DFFE officials visited the site to meet with municipal representatives and witness the situation firsthand. By this time, the whale carcass had begun decomposing, making further sampling impossible. However, not all is lost, stakeholders were able to collect valuable scientific data while the specimen was still fresh.
Importantly, the South African National Strandings Network has recommended that the skeleton be preserved as reference material for researchers, scholars, and the interested public. Coordination is now underway between DFFE, South African National Parks, and Agulhas National Park to make this possible.

We really enjoyed our stay. The house is spacious and beautifully furnished and very well equipped. Well stocked kitchen with lots of space. You can see the ocean from the top bedroom as well as from the terrace. It’s a very quick walk to the beach.
