Johannesburg's rivers face severe pollution - with thousands of tonnes of trash entering the city's waterways every year.

Through the project, a small community initiative in Alexandra is working with local artisans and scientists to pull litter and debris from the Jukskei River, reducing flood risk and transforming the riverside into an art-filled public space.

Last week, the SUNCASA project brought together the IISD Procurement and WRI Finance teams in Johannesburg for a collaborative capacity-building session with our local partners.

The training focused on strengthening procurement and financial processes to support the successful implementation of nature-based solutions. It was also a great opportunity to build trust, align on goals, and foster deeper collaboration across all stakeholders.

As the local managing partner, JICP is proud to be managing this process and ensuring that our partners are equipped to deliver impactful, community-centered outcomes. Together, we’re building stronger systems—and stronger teams—to drive sustainable change.
