Over 160,000 years ago, hunter-gatherers thrived along our Southern Cape coastline, and the Hessequa region holds some of the world's oldest evidence of creative humans!

Fast-forward to ancient ingenuity: The Noorkapper stone-walled fish traps (visvywers) at Skulpiesbaai Nature Reserve in Stilbaai West. Built by the San people more than 3,000 years ago, these tidal "pools"โ€”crafted from rocks and pebblesโ€”trap fish during high spring tides. Fish swim in at new moon, get caught as waters recede, and fishermen harvest their catch. (Traps ranged from 10mยฒ nooks to half a rugby fieldโ€”each with its own name and owner!)
Today, these treasures are National Heritage Sites (since the '90s), protected in the Stilbaai Marine Conservation Area, and lovingly maintained by Clean Wall Foundation, Cape Nature, and Sea Fisheries.
