Scary Hippo Encounter

We were sitting in a makeshift ground blind near the water’s edge. Hunting bushpig and the many nocturnal predators Africa has to offer is often overlooked.

The sun had set and everything was quiet. Then, we heard movement behind us.

I slowly turned around and looked through the thermal.

My heart nearly stopped.

A massive hippo had quietly moved in behind us, just yards away.

In that moment, one thing became painfully clear—we didn’t have a rifle big enough to stop him if he decided to charge.

For a few long seconds, all we could do was watch and hope he wasn’t interested in us.

Thankfully, he turned around and slowly disappeared back into the water.

•Quick fact about the hippo:
Hippo is one of the top five most dangerous animals in South Africa.

Moments like these are a reminder that an African hunt is about far more than the trophy you’re pursuing. You never know what the bush has in store.

Hunter Spotlight | Mike Crea

Another unforgettable safari, another incredible adventure!

This week, we’re shining the spotlight on Mike Crea, who joined us once again for an exciting South African hunting experience. Returning hunters are always a pleasure to welcome back, and sharing another adventure together made this trip even more special.

Our journey took us to the beautiful Free State, where Mike enjoyed the challenge of hunting some of the region’s iconic plains game. From a stunning Letswe, to beautiful Springbucks and Bushbuck, every trophy tells the story of patience, dedication, and unforgettable moments in the African bush.

Of course, the memories don’t end with the hunt. Evenings around the campfire, great conversations, good food, and the friendships built along the way are what make every safari truly unforgettable.

Hunter Spotlight | Lu Crea

Every safari tells a story, and this one is all about Lu Crea.

From the beautiful landscapes of the Free State to unforgettable moments in the field, Lu enjoyed another incredible South African hunting adventure with the Limpopo Hunting Safaris family.

During this trip, we spent a few days in the Free State in pursuit of some of the region’s iconic plains game species. Lu harvested a magnificent Black Wildebeest and beautiful Blesbuck—trophies that represent patience, skill, and memories that will last a lifetime.

A safari is about so much more than the hunt. It’s about breathtaking scenery, comfortable lodges, evenings around the fire, and friendships that grow stronger with every visit.

Bush pigs are among Africa’s most intelligent and elusive animals, often travelling and feeding almost exclusively at night, making them one of the most exciting species to hunt.
