Nkwe is our place to be whenever we have to be in Pretoria. It’s not too far from the shops, garages, and family where we like to go to to stock up, get repairs done, or meet up with for a lunch or drink. The main reason for being back was that we wanted some USB ports in the bedroom and kitchen, and Wil and Wilma had some major work done to make to Cruiser work for them. While we were in Pretoria we had a major squeak in our breaks checked. After a long search it was found that when they replaced the break pads they forgot to check and grease the break pistons. They were rusty and bent and hampering the rear breaks. So we had that sorted.
Nkwe is also a place of sweet memories for Diane. During her Uni days she would often go with friends for a braai and swim on Fridays. She was surprised the place still exists, although improved, and people still go for a leisure day with friends and family for a braai, swim and dive from the rocks.
Now that all the work is done, The Beast and Kymani are ready to rock and roll, it’s time to start exploring. Next destination: Golden Gate Highland National Park.

The Beast, it’s official, our truck is baptised, blessed and stickered. Now we have to keep those posts coming to keep the world entertained and up-to-date on our travels.
Can’t have a better place to officially name a truck than Kruger National Park. We had a week to spare before could work on the trucks, so we did some last minute grocery shopping, filled our tanks and off we went …..
Due to the heavy rains earlier this season the north of Kruger is hard to reach and not all facilities are up and running yet and since we only had a week, we stayed in the south.
We saw plenty, hard to share everything, but show you our beauties. We’ve been to Kruger a few times now, but never have we seen so many Wild Dogs. Many dogs in the packs have trackers, so a conservation programme seems to be successful.
The park was green and lush, compared to the brown and dried grass we normally see in august. It’s also the season for young game, like impala, wildebeest and baby elephants who don’t know yet what to do with their trunks.
Although we drove from Crocodile Bridge Camp back to Berg en Dal Camp, we didn’t see any Rhino. Plenty bull elephants on the road though, blocking it, staring at us, showing off who’s the real king of the jungle.

It’s been quiet but we have been extremely busy. The family is back home, and Wil and Wilma () have arrived and have collected their Land Cruiser. So, time to get organized and start traveling….
It took way more time to get organized than expected though, but we are on our way and have slept our first nights in The Beast.
We like The Beast and it’s extra’s, like the lights, pockets everywhere and the Alucab / maxx-track table. But, we needed a lot more, like duvets, sheets, pillows, boxes, two burner stove, a starter cable and wanted even more, like a towing hook step, porta potti, sharp kitchen knives and walky talkies. So we crisscrossed through Pretoria, emptied our wallets and filled The Beast.
Wil and Wilma had to buy more or less the same things. However they also had to change a couple of things on their truck to make it work for them, and we wanted some USB points for charging so we passed by for the upgrades.
Unfortunately we had to wait a week, as they are busy, so what to do in South Africa when you have a week to spare? Kruger!!!

We have driven the first kilometers with The Beast!!
The last week we stayed with family at the Mabalingwe Nature Reserve and had a fantastic time. We had plenty of good food and wine and even more good laughters while sharing family stories. Some family you just don’t see often enough so we had a lot off catching up to do.
Unfortunately we couldn’t drive The Beast in the park for game viewing, but Diane didn’t mind being our ranger for a change. We saw plenty of game, and saw a few birds we hadn’t seen before. The rhino with its enormous horn was a highlight.
Being there also gave us the change to take a closer look at all the goodies hiding in The Beast. We took stock of the recovery gear, added some air to its boots, and figured out how the spotlights work. First thing we need to buy? A porta porti!! 🫣
Can’t wait to go out and explore South Africa!!

Bully and the Winter Olympics!!
A visit to the famous Medeu speed skating rink was high on Martin’s bucket list last year. With the Winter Olympics currently on its way, It’s a good moment for a throw back.
In the 80’s of the previous millennium, Medeu speed skating rink was legendary for the many world records. Speed skaters like Schönbrunn, Kania-Enke from the former GDR, but also icons like Shasherin and Bozhyev from the former USSR, skated many worlds records in Medeu. Our own Dutch speed skater legend Leo Visser became second during the world championships allround men in Medeu in 1988.
A legendary speed skating rink, still!!
It’s more than a ‘been there, done that’ moment, when we see Kazakh speed skaters .exe participate during the 500m at the Olympics in Milano. It’s more than special. For those who know, championships where often about jotting down lap times in the newspaper.
Medeu is iconic and Bully has ‘entered’ holy skating ground.

Bully and The Beast… a lovely story…
Yes, we are back on the socials! New plans with a new vehicle!
Meet Bully’s little brother, The Beast!
A big name for another friendly giant.

We always had plans to discover Africa and had major plans in 2020, but then COVID came… and the rest is history. After our adventures with Bully we decided to give Africa another go. But, not by driving south with Bully along the western route, but by doing it the African way, with a proper fully kitted Land Cruiser. Hence, The Beast!

But what about Bully? After our epic trip through the Stans and the Pamir Highway with Bully last summer, we parked him in Armenia for a well-deserved rest. We’ll pick him up later this year for a proper Georgia and Armenia tour.

So, stay tuned for some serious African adventures: braai, boerewors and The Beast!

We like an adventure but are often too chicken, not so adventurous. Where others climb steep hills, drive narrow roads, and have a subscription on being stuck, we are very cautious. We know Bully can do more than we ask, but our brains stop challenging Bully. We had planned to go to Peak Lenin and had to go through a tiny river crossing for that, which we did, but…
A makeshift pontoon / bridge was a bit too much to ask and a bit too daring for us. While a local dump truck raced over the pontoon, probably his daily routine, we were scraping courage and at the end we bailed. What could have gone wrong? Probably absolutely nothing, but try to tell your brain differently!! (See commends for the vids).
So after we recollected ourselves, and had a strong coffee with cookies to swallow our disappointment of not going to Peak Lenin, we decided to go to Osh. Remember, Osh is the finish line of the Pamir Highway.
From Sary-Tash you go through another two stunning mountain passes. As usual we hit a construction site more or less at the end of our driving day. Interesting how trucks line up neatly on the right and regular cars pile up next to the trucks and race off as soon as the road opens.
Another interesting fact is the appearance of Chinese (registered) trucks and cars in Kyrgyzstan. As in Tajikistan, the trucks are full from China, and drive back empty.
We had stocked up already, so only had to find ourselves a lovely spot. Which we did, close to a river, but we were too tired, and it was too hot for proper sightseeing.
Tomorrow the last leg of the Pamir Highway!!

Time to leave stunning Tajikistan. We have driven the country from west to east, from Dushanbe, the Pamir Highway, to Murghab and the Ak-Baital, and enjoyed its breathtaking scenery. It’s been a tough ride, the combination of the heat, extremely bad roads and distances made it quite a challenge for us. But we wouldn’t want to miss it for anything in the world!
We haven’t finished the Pamir Highway though, the finish line is Osj, hopefully next week. Today we leave Lake Karakul, cross another two passes, amongst which the Kyzyl Art pass, and the border with Kyrgyzstan.
The road toward the Tajik side of the border is fine till the last couple of hundred meters, when the tarmac stops. The border is more or less at the highest point of the pass. The border procedure is simple and quick and before we know it we drive in no man’s land to the Kyrgyzstan border.
We were a bit in doubt about the 25km through no man’s land, we heard horrible stories about a possible bad, narrow and steep road, but also heard that although it’s a bit off-road in the beginning, it’s fine, and the conditions are heavily exaggerated by so called influencers.
We noticed that the first part of the road and the serpentine, was recently maintained by a grader/ shovel and the road was wide and the surface was hard sand. The serpentine could be a tricky part during bad wether, but in dry conditions it’s a pretty part to drive.
Towards the Kyrgyzstan border you drive through a stunning narrow valley, next the a small river. The scenery keeps on changing and the snowy tops and the colors of the mountains in the side valleys are gorgeous.
The Kyrgyzstan border took a bit longer than expected, due to software issues with their new system, but they were friendly, and apologetic.
Tired after another long but beautiful day, we settled for a Hostel in Sary-Tash and opted for a rest day before finalizing the Pamir Highway and exploring a new country…
