🖤Africa’s Thunderbird: The Ground Hornbill
Meet one of Africa’s most fascinating and misunderstood birds – the Southern Ground Hornbill.
With their deep booming call echoing across the bushveld and striking black-and-red colouring, these birds are hard to miss — and even harder to forget.
Ground hornbills don’t just fly — they stride through the savanna, hunting insects, reptiles, and even small mammals.
Sadly, they’re listed as vulnerable, with habitat loss and slow breeding rates threatening their numbers. But conservation efforts across South Africa are helping bring this remarkable species back from the brink.
Did you know? These birds live up to 50 years and are one of the few bird species known to teach their young!
