Why here? | Where Stone Becomes Memory
Standing among the ancient engravings of Twyfelfontein, in one of the emptiest corners of Namibia, that was the question we couldn't shake. The distances between water are enormous. In places you can see 60 km without another sign of life. So why did people return to this one spot for thousands of years?
The answer came days later, from a stranger in a Swakopmund restaurant: "The people from Twyfelfontein travelled to the coast along the riverbeds."
Suddenly the desert wasn't a barrier. It was a network. Dry rivers like the Huab and Hoanib became ancient highways, leading to springs, shade, wildlife, and finally to one of the richest coastlines on Earth. Carved far inland, we even found a seal.
What looks to us like Mars was, to the people who understood it, a landscape of possibility. These engravings aren't just pictures in stone. They're proof that knowledge can turn an impossible land into a home.
