Khaki Fever Safaris Unique and tailor-made African safaris that are crafted to suit your interests and needs. For travel WHO ARE WE? WHY CHOOSE KHAKI FEVER?

We are passionate about travel, and passionate about Africa. Khaki Fever is based in Johannesburg, South Africa, and was born out of its founder’s, Julie’s, obsession with Africa and with travel. Julie has been going “to the bush” – or on safari – for as long as she can remember. From mobile safaris in Zimbabwe, island-hopping in the Seychelles, and road-tripping around South Africa; to the luxury

lodges of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, hiking the unforgettable Otter Trail, and kayaking between the tropical islands of Madagascar, Julie has seen and experienced what Africa has to offer, first hand. Pursuing a career in the travel industry is not only a job for Julie, it fulfills a deep passion for travel and for Africa, and allows her to provide others with unforgettable, and life-changing African experiences. Thanks to Julie’s in-depth knowledge of Africa, her relationships within the travel industry, and her high standards for service and authentic African experiences, Khaki Fever has mastered the planning and facilitation of great African adventures, so that you don’t have to! Safari operators are a dime a dozen in Africa, so deciding who to use can be overwhelming and confusing. Do they really have your interests at heart?

• Khaki Fever is a small company “on the ground” in Africa. Come straight to us and avoid agents and middle-men who add on a margin and increase your end cost. We believe in the personal touch and creating meaningful relationships with our guests, so that we can really understand what it is you want for your vacation.

• We are allergic to the “tour group”, “one-size-fits-all” approach to creating your African adventure. We want to know what YOU want, while providing the most authentic and personal experiences.

• We are seasoned travelers ourselves, so we understand what you want and need. We also know that you’re spending your precious time away from work, your savings or hard-earned salary on this holiday, and you need someone you trust to make it worthwhile. Khaki Fever is all about giving you fantastic value for your money, while creating an unforgettable adventure, that’s uniquely yours!

• We know Southern Africa like the back of our hand, and we’ve traveled it ourselves! We’re all about giving you an incredible, authentic African adventure, far away from the heavily-trodden tourist routes.

• We don’t believe in rushing you between destinations or packing your holiday full of activities that you may not even be interested in – some people might not actually want a cultural tour of the local village, they’d rather go on a privately guided birding walk. It’s your holiday, and you need to relax too!

• We are a small, passionate, owner-run company that really does want to give you the most incredible experience of Africa – we’re passionate about our continent and we want to share it with you! You are not just a number, and we’re not a big corporate where your enquiry will get bounced between countless agents trying to up-sell you in order to get a bigger commission.

• Khaki Fever also visits every property that we send our guests to, to ensure they adhere to our high standards. And we’re not talking about gold taps and 6-course meals, we’re talking about authentic and unforgettable experiences; value-for-money-luxury; tasteful decor; excellent service; environmental sensitivity; and outstanding hospitality.

• Going through Khaki Fever also means you pay the same price as booking directly with the lodge or bush camp yourself. We get our commission from the properties, not from you. So, take the slog out of researching and planning your next trip, and let us do it!

Immersed in nature... there's no better place for our kids to be!

Sandy feet, dirty clothes, climbing rocks and exploring... and not a screen in sight 🙌

Jonathan Haidt talks of Gen Z being the "Anxious Generation" due to them growing up with a phone-based childhood instead of a play-based childhood. We are doing everything in our power to keep our kids free-ranging and exploring in the outdoors 💚

Wishing everyone who celebrates a very happy Easter weekend! 🐰

Here we are celebrating in our happy place (the bush!) with special friends and family. Our daughter wrote a letter to the Easter bunny to warn him of the treacherous route to deliver eggs to our camp (through lion and leopard territory)... "just try your best" she wrote 😂

Let's hope he makes it!

Where Should I go on Safari? 🐾

ZIMBABWE: For Adventure Seekers

Zimbabwe boasts spectacular, top-notch wildlife reserves and a thrilling safari experience! Mana Pools National Park offers unforgettable kayak and walking trails and glamping-style accommodation on the edge of the Zambezi River (pictured). Gonarezhou National Park is a must-visit with its raw and remote safari experience, where you won't see another soul! The Eastern Highlands region is a birdwatcher’s paradise, and Victoria Falls is home to countless adrenaline activities like rafting and gorge swinging to keep the whole family entertained. This country offers something for everyone and is relatively affordable compared to Botswana and Kenya👌

Challenges: Some parks are vast, so there's not always the concentration of animals like in other destinations. There is the risk of political and economic instability, which may affect travel logistics, and popular parks/Vic Falls can get overrun with tourists in the peak season.

Where Should I go on Safari? 🐾

BOTSWANA: Exclusive & Unspoiled Luxury

A Botswana safari is hard to beat, and is renowned for its leadership in conservation and exclusive safari offerings. The Okavango Delta is home to an abundance of lions, leopards, elephants, hippos, birdlife, unusual antelopes, and much more. The Chobe National Park is home to Africa's largest concentration of elephants (Jun -Oct), and sleeping under the stars on the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans is not to be missed - an unforgettable experience for the whole family!

Challenges: Botswana focuses on high-end travel (eco-friendly tourism with limited visitor numbers has created a more exclusive experience). Most areas are inaccessible by car, making internal flights essential.

Where Should I Go on Safari? 🐾

UGANDA: The Primate Paradise

This is an entirely unique safari experience where getting on foot in search of Africa's most endangered primates is both a humbling adventure and a privilege. Trek through Bwindi's virgin rainforest in search of mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Visit Queen Elizabeth National Park - famous for its tree-climbing lions and diverse range of species - while Kibale National Park offers some of the best chimpanzee trekking in Africa. Uganda's forests are also teeming with colourful and unusual birdlife. Uganda is small, so visiting all these exciting destinations is easy in a single trip!

Challenges: Gorilla trekking is extremely expensive, so not suited to budget travellers. Roads and infrastructure can also affect logistics. Uganda focuses more on primate and cultural experiences compared to traditional big game safaris.

Where Should I go on Safari? 🐾

ZAMBIA: Off The Beaten Track

Zambia is off the tourist track and home to vast and remote reserves that are still authentically wild. South Luangwa National Park offers world-class walking safaris with an abundance of wildlife, including a big leopard population. The Lower Zambezi is fabulous for kayak adventures and fishing, and far-flung Kafue National Park is where you’ll find yourself in a true African wilderness with endless horizons and an array of unique wildlife - and not another human soul!

Challenges: Zambia is remote, and some destinations require long hours of travel to get to. Flying between destinations is always possible, but this does significantly add to the cost.

Where Should I go on Safari? 🐾

TANZANIA: Predators & People

Less commercial than Kenya, the Serengeti National Park teems with predators that can be seen following and hunting the herds of the Great Migration. The Ngorongoro Crater’s dramatic landscape has high concentrations of unique species like black rhino, spotted hyenas, and African wild dogs. Tarangire National Park is home to groves of ancient baobabs and fantastic elephant sightings, and all these wildlife "hot spots" are conveniently located nearby!

Tanzania is also the ancestral home of the Maasai people, and interacting with them in their communities offers a very special and important experience for the whole family.

Challenges: Tanzania can also be very expensive if you choose to visit remote lodges where internal flights add up. Reliability of local tour guides and smaller operators offering day-trips and tours is also a concern.

Where Should I go on Safari? 🐾

NAMIBIA: A Photographer's Dream

Namibia is renowned for its stunning and dramatic landscapes, including the towering sand dunes of Sossusvlei and the vast expanses of the Namib Desert. Etosha National Park is famous for its waterholes that attract masses of large animals in the dry season. Unique experiences such as flying safaris over the vast Namib landscapes, guided tours to find rare desert creatures, and quad biking over the dunes attract adventurous travellers from around the world. Namibia is a photographer and stargazer’s dream destination!

Challenges: Namibia is a vast country, and the distance between destinations can be significant. It also doesn't have the same concentration of “Big 5” animals (elephant, lion, leopard, rhino, leopard, and Cape buffalo) as other safari destinations.

Where Should I go on Safari? 🐾

KENYA: Great Migration Excitement

Kenya is most well known for the Great Migration as it passes through the Maasai Mara, where millions of wildebeest risk life and limb to cross the Mara River with its hoards of crocodiles (Sep-Oct). Lake Nakuru National Park and its famously stunning landscape and thousands of flamingos that congregate along its shores are a bucket-list spectacle. Amboseli National Park is a highlight for breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and huge herds of elephants wandering along flat, picturesque African plains.

Challenges: Popular parks can become crowded with tourists and safari vehicles, diminishing the sense of unspoiled wilderness and exclusivity. Safaris can be expensive if opting for remote areas (with no crowds), and park fees are very expensive in Kenya.

Where Should I go on Safari?

SOUTH AFRICA: Best for First-Timers

South Africa is a fantastic "soft landing" for first-time safari goers. The Greater Kruger region (the park with its surrounding private reserves) is wild, vast, and easy to access with a range of budget options. Madikwe Game Reserve offers a malaria-free environment, perfect for young kids. Good animal sightings are fairly "easy" or common in South Africa due to there being a lot more lodges, roads, and safari vehicles.

You can also easily tie your safari in with a visit to the Cape Winelands or the Garden Route’s beaches and quaint coastal towns for the perfect all-rounded holiday.

Challenges: Tourist hotspots, like Cape Town and the busier parks, swell with visitors in peak seasons, which detracts from the "wildness" a fair bit. Safety in urban areas can also be a concern, especially for solo travelers. Despite this, South Africa is accessible and rewarding, especially if you're on a budget!
