Letaba Avocado Study Group Held at Allesbeste, Tzaneen 🥑

Labserve attended the Letaba Avocado Study Group held at Allesbeste in Tzaneen. The event complemented the previous day’s workshop on bees and hive management, extending discussions to pollination and the various factors involved in optimizing it.

The study group featured presentations from representatives of Bee-Tech Group, Dux Agri, and Agraforum. Speakers shared insights on pollination strategies, hive management, and best practices for improving crop production through effective pollination management.

Discussions were led by Michel Bruggeman, who highlighted the importance of bees in orchard production and shared practical guidance on bee management to achieve optimal pollination and improve fruit set in orchards.

Industry experts shared valuable insights and practical initiatives aimed at driving science-based agricultural excellence. Each topic had a presentation followed by an open discussion.

Labserve attended the Hortgro Symposium 2026: Growing Forward in a Changing World at Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West.
A week jam-packed with valuable information and insights for the deciduous fruit industry. Opening the symposium was Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, discussing the economic outlook, export opportunities, and the importance of adapting products for international markets.
Topics addressed included phytosanitary management, biosecurity, IPM, and rethinking the regenerative agriculture approach. It was also insightful learning from other countries on the establishment of new high-density orchards, selecting the right rootstocks, and understanding what works best for different environments and climates.
An informative and inspiring week filled with innovation, collaboration, and future-focused agriculture.

Labserve attended the annual SA Wine Summit 🍷 Context is King in Stellenbosch on 28 May 2026. Context influences every decision made in the wine industry from the vineyard to the marketplace. South African wine is influenced by economic shifts, climate realities and consumer trends. Harvest 2026 was reviewed placing it within the broader context of climatic shifts and global market expectations. Innovation shaping the wine industry’s future, understanding the consumer’s cultural and economic context to create market strategies and regulatory pressures were unpacked.

🌱 What are MRLs and why do they matter?
MRL (Maximum Residue Limit) is the highest legally permitted amount of a pesticide or herbicide residue allowed in or on food. These limits are carefully established to help protect consumer health, support environmental responsibility, and ensure food safety standards are met worldwide. 🍎

When crop protection products are used correctly, tiny traces known as residues may remain on produce. MRLs set exceptionally conservative safety thresholds, and simply detecting a residue does not mean the food is unsafe for consumption.

MRLs are an important global trade tool, giving consumers confidence that fresh produce is safe and compliant with international food safety standards. Different countries have different MRL requirements, making accurate testing and responsible farming practices essential.

Labserve attended the CRI Production, IPM & DM Workshop at Ashanti Estate, Paarl. Discussions covered MRLs, profit driven production, irrigation, fertilizers, and pest/disease sprays, with insightful talks on biosecurity and managing major pests and diseases. Take home message: Think before you irrigate, fertigate, or spray; proper scouting saves money and protects orchards. Report unusual findings to prevent threats like citrus HLB from entering South Africa. With recent orchard flooding, the big question is, what now? The next steps are to sanitize orchard floors and trees (remove potentially infected fruits), avoid stressing trees further, and prioritize careful recovery.
