🥼 LAB MYTH MONDAY 🥼
MYTH: One sample tells the whole story.
FACT: A result is only as good as the sample(s) behind it. Representative sampling is essential.
A laboratory can use the best equipment and follow the strictest quality procedures, but if the sample isn't representative, the results may not reflect the true picture.
Poor sampling can lead to misleading results — and ultimately, costly decisions based on inaccurate information.
SUB-SAMPLE SOILS BY:
• Crop, cultivar & plant age.
• Soil texture and colour.
• Altitude and slope.
• Irrigation system.
Collecting soil samples is simple, but the laboratory can only test the sample that you supply. Following these proper steps ensures accurate results.
• Remove the top 5-10cm of soil.
• Use a shovel, soil probe, or auger
• Sampling depth varies depending on your needs, but the average soil samples are taken at 30 cm depth.
• Take many sub-samples from each area to compile a composite sample.
• Combine all the sub-samples from one area in a clean bucket.
• Remove debris like rocks, roots, or leaves.
• Mix thoroughly to create a uniform composite sample.
• Transfer the mixed soil into a clean plastic bag.
• Label the sample with details such as area name, date, and depth.
• Send the soil samples to a Labserve branch as soon as possible.
• Ensure the soil is dry to prevent mould build up during transit.
• Avoid sampling when soil is extremely wet or dry.
• Clean tools between areas to prevent cross-contamination.
By following these simple steps, you'll ensure reliable soil analysis results. Annual soil sampling is essential for understanding your soil health. It helps you identify nutrient deficiencies, and helps you optimise fertiliser use, which in turn improves crop yields.
