Labserve attended the annual SA Wine Summit 🍷 Context is King in Stellenbosch on 28 May 2026. Context influences every decision made in the wine industry from the vineyard to the marketplace. South African wine is influenced by economic shifts, climate realities and consumer trends. Harvest 2026 was reviewed placing it within the broader context of climatic shifts and global market expectations. Innovation shaping the wine industry’s future, understanding the consumer’s cultural and economic context to create market strategies and regulatory pressures were unpacked.

🌱 What are MRLs and why do they matter?
MRL (Maximum Residue Limit) is the highest legally permitted amount of a pesticide or herbicide residue allowed in or on food. These limits are carefully established to help protect consumer health, support environmental responsibility, and ensure food safety standards are met worldwide. 🍎

When crop protection products are used correctly, tiny traces known as residues may remain on produce. MRLs set exceptionally conservative safety thresholds, and simply detecting a residue does not mean the food is unsafe for consumption.

MRLs are an important global trade tool, giving consumers confidence that fresh produce is safe and compliant with international food safety standards. Different countries have different MRL requirements, making accurate testing and responsible farming practices essential.

Labserve attended the CRI Production, IPM & DM Workshop at Ashanti Estate, Paarl. Discussions covered MRLs, profit driven production, irrigation, fertilizers, and pest/disease sprays, with insightful talks on biosecurity and managing major pests and diseases. Take home message: Think before you irrigate, fertigate, or spray; proper scouting saves money and protects orchards. Report unusual findings to prevent threats like citrus HLB from entering South Africa. With recent orchard flooding, the big question is, what now? The next steps are to sanitize orchard floors and trees (remove potentially infected fruits), avoid stressing trees further, and prioritize careful recovery.

Topic: Heavy Metals in Soil and Plant Health

Discussions emphasized the importance of monitoring and managing heavy metal concentrations in agricultural soils, given their potential to negatively affect plant growth, crop quality, and food safety. Participants also explored current norms, guidelines, and analytical approaches used to assess heavy metal presence and its biological impact on crops.
The forum provided a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, aligning regional expertise on best practices and reinforcing the need for standardized approaches to ensure sustainable soil management and optimal plant health outcomes.

Larne Auerswald from Labserve Laboratories presented at the Woolworths agricultural/supplier-focused “Vision Zero Farmers Day” yesterday at Allée Bleue Estate in Franschhoek.
The theme for the day was technology and innovation based. The ‘Vision Zero Farmers Day” is part of Woolworths’ ongoing agricultural supplier engagement programme involving farming sustainability, spray techniques, food safety, regenerative agriculture and worker safety. “Vision Zero” focusses on pesticide reduction, responsible agrichemical applications, environmental soundness, climate resilience and residue compliance and the Woolworths’ Farming for the Future sustainable targets.
